Generation No. 2

2.  Walter2 WALLER (Henry1)8 was born 17279, and died June 1791 in Age 6410.  He married Elizabeth UNKNOWN wife of Walter WALLER11.  She was born 173212, and died November 1811 in Age 7913.

Notes for Walter WALLER:

No suitable baptism has been found in the Rudgwick Parish Registers.  On the IGI there are two possible baptisms in Sussex:  The information for the first has still to be verified from the Parish Registers

3rd October 1727 in Ardingley, Walter, son of Thomas and Jane and

9th February 1727 in Horsham, Walter, son of Henry and Martha. Henry’s and Martha’s

other children were  Martha (1729) Henry (1731)    Martha (1733) Henry (1735) Sarah

     (1736) Thomas (1737) Mary (1740) Mary (1742) and Charles (1743)

On the IGI there are no suitable baptisms in either Surrey or Hampshire.

At the 1748/1749 Lent Assizes Walter and William WALLER were accused of stealing a sheep worth 10/6d from William GARDNER.  They were found not guilty and discharged.   Further research is being undertaken to find out if this Walter WALLER was the person involved.

THE ACCUSED

On the Tuesday afternoon of  the 1748/1749 Lent Assizes the jury was sworn in.

Henry Galland  Joseph Fuller

Walter Galland John Allingham

Jonathan Betchley   William Faulkner

James Burt     John Burt

Walter Chatfield    Thomas Buckwell

John Gannard   Nicholas Vinall

That afternoon they listened to the case against John Mills and found him guilty of murdering Richard Hawkins.  John Mills’ sentence was that he should be hanged.   The jury could not decide on the verdict for his accomplice, John Rennals, who was accused of aiding and abetting Mills and the case was first adjourned until the next morning, when it was again adjourned until the next assizes.

On the Wednesday morning two more men were sentenced to be hanged following guilty verdicts by the same jury.  In the first case that day, William Sheeman had been accused of murdering William Gally, and then John Brown, known as Jockey Brown, had been accused of Highway Robbery. He had stolen twelve guineas from JOHN WALLER.  (As yet he does not appear on our charts).

Another victim had been SARAH TICKNER.  Goods worth 8d, 7s, 1/9d and 6d had been stolen from her by Joseph Mosely and his sentence was transportation for 7 years. Was John Upton luckier as his sentence for stealing goods to the value of 8d was to be whipped?

There were sixteen cases in all, but it was case number six which was of particular interest.  WILLIAM WALLER and WALTER WALLER were accused of stealing a sheep worth

10/6d from William Gardner.  This could be our Walter (the father on Chart 0600), who would have been about 21 years old.  Given the sentences handed out to other miscreants for similar crimes during the day, to be hanged or transported, it was a great relief to read that the two men were found not guilty, and discharged.

If that had not happened, where would we be today?

On the 6th October 1775 a marriage settlement was drawn up involving Edward NAPPER, Esquire of Hyes, and Mary BOORER, a widow of Ockley, Surrey.  The property was assigned to Walter WALLER of Rudgwick, Peruke Maker, and  James BRABY of Ockley, a Wheelwright.  They were to act as Trustees to ensure that Edward and his bride did not dispose of all or parts of the Hyes estate.  Walter WALLER  has signed the agreement and added his seal.  A Walter WALLER was also involved as witness to many documents over the years which would suggest that he  was well educated, trusted and respected.  Our WALLER family were all able to sign their name very competently in  the Parish Registers. Further research is being undertaken in an attempt to ascertain whether the varous Walter WALLERs are one and the same person.

THE TRUSTEE

If, in 1748, he was involved in activities which led to him being accused of sheep stealing, it could be that by the end of his life WALTER WALLER had become a respected citizen.  In 1775 Edward Napper, Esquire, of Hyes in Rudgwick, the son of John Napper and his wife, previously Mary Trower, was planning to marry Mary Boorer.  The marriage settlement included the property at Hyes which was to go to Edward for life, then to Mary Boorer for her life, and subsequently to their heirs.   An agreement was drawn up to protect the inheritance once it was in the hands of the young couple.  It meant that before he could sell any part of the estate, Edward Napper had to go to the trustees to whom the property was assigned on the 6th October 1775.

The trustees were James Braby of Ockley, a wheelwright, and WALTER WALLER of Rudgwick, a peruke (wig) maker.

This was not the only occasion when a WALTER WALLER of Rudgwick was called upon to be involved in such an agreement.  There were many instances where this name appears as a witness to signatures in parish documents.  Thus, if the two men are the same person, at least by the time he was reaching his fifties, the position held by WALTER WALLER within the village of Rudgwick was surely one of importance.

1841         Green Lanes, Rudgwick, Sussex

With Daniel LONGHURST Age 20, Ag Lab, George WALLER (16) and Ann (8)   No husband

                 present

I think this information about Daniel LONGHURST is incorrect.  There is a son Daniel for

Daniel and Rebecca baptised in 1839 on family.search and on the 1851 census, there is a

                 son Daniel age 12

So I looked at the 1841census again.

In the age column the "2" has been entered in line with the units position of other ages, and

then a "0" has been squashed in beside the "2".

In the occupation column there is "Ag Lab" with a cross beside it.

I think this entry should be for Daniel LONGHURST age 2 son of Daniel and Rebecca, with no

occupation and that the "Ag Lab" occupation belong to step-brother George WALLER

1851        Ewhurst, Surrey

Living with Daniel and Rebecca was son Daniel LONGHURST (12) born Rudgwick, Sussex

1861        Lemon Lane, Ewhurst, Surrey

1871        Ellens Green, Ewhurst, Surrey as a widow

Living with her son John WALLER and his family

1881        Dorks, Horsham Road, Warnham, Sussex

Was this Rebecca?  If so, who is Mary Ann COOK?  Was she a daughter of Daniel

LONGHURST?  She was a Mary WALLER who appears at different times to use the names

Mary, Mary Ann or Ann.  We think, therefore, she was the Ann who appeared on the 1841

                census above.

Mary Ann COOK Head widow (48) born Rudgwick, Sussex (she was 42 in 1871!)

Notes for George WALLER:

Addresses

1841         Green Lanes, Rudgwick, Sussex

With Daniel LONGHURST Age 20, Ag Lab and George WALLER (16)   No husband present

Information from John TERRY'S web site 24/1/2013

Problems with this baptism as can be seen by the "possibilities", the IGI has her down as being born 27th January 1818 and her death 14th February 1818. Ancestry.com has the baptism as shown 27th December 1919. It is definitely her baptism as you can view the actual baptism, however you cannot see the actual date she was baptised, you can just see the following baptism to hers which was 1st March 1919, so Ancestry must have the 27th December 1919 incorrect and I would think she was possibly baptised the day she was born, ie 27th January. The IGI is information supplied so again I would think it is incorrect and the year should be 1819 not 1818. I cannot prove any of this so at present have just put possibly on the chart above

I have searched for a birth for a WALLER born Sussex in 1845 +/- 2 (so from 1843-1847)

The only entries in the Horsham district for a male were for:

Charles James, December 1846

There were no entries anywhere in Sussex which looked like Meand

The only other entries in the Horsham District were in the March quarter 1844 for a Louisa and in June quarter 1845 for a Sarah

1911        In a Shed, Sherborne Farm, Albury, Surrey

The 1911 census was obviously completed by someone other than Alfred and has him born in Chiddingfold, Surrey.  The handwriting is that same as that entered where the address is usually found.  It says: "On information of Police" and is signed E.T. P Registrar.  Given this situation it was probably understandable that the incorrect age at death was shown in the Index in 1927.

THE COBB FAMILY IN COOMBE KEYNES, DORSET

Arthur James COBB was the first of his family to be baptised in the church in Coombe Keynes, Dorset.  His parents, David and Elizabeth, had married in 1849 at St Mary the Virgin in East Stoke and in 1851 were living in Highwood, East Stoke where their first three children, Elizabeth Arabella, Caroline and Amos, were born.

By 1858 they had moved the 2½ miles westwards to the village of Coombe Keynes. When deciphering the 1861 Census return it was originally thought that the family of 6 lived at "Lodges".  On a visit to the village in 1997 we were kindly driven across the fields to the Lodges, the northern entrance (no longer used) to the castle at Lulworth.  The "one up one down" buildings had apparently been used as dwelling places until the end of the second world war.  They were cold and damp, and a long way from a source of water.

However, these  imposing, but uncomfortable buildings were not the home of the COBB family, the Census had been misread.  Instead, they probably lived somewhere to the south of the village, on the west side of the road to East Lulworth.

When visiting Coombe Keynes, we stay with Helen Cooper (our driver across the fields mentioned above).  She and her family live in April Thatch, the previous home of the BROWN family, one of whose daughters married Reuben COBB, a cousin of Arthur James.  Reuben COBB and his wife lived at number 11, next door to April Thatch.    Unfortunately this building was allowed to collapse, and a new house called Rooks has been built on the site.

ARTHUR JAMES COBB AS A SIGNALMAN

Arthur James COBB was born in Coombe Keynes, Dorset in 1858.    He was the fourth child of David and Elizabeth COBB and, on the 2nd January 1859, was the first of this particular family group to be baptised in the Church of the Holy Rood in the village of Coombe Keynes. The event took place in this village because, sometime between 1851 and the birth of their fourth child, David and Elizabeth had moved from Highwood, in East Stoke to live at the eastern end of Coombe Keynes.   Six years later Arthur’s sister was born in the same place but by 1871, with their parents, the two children had moved to Grange Road, Church Knowle.

Already living in Church Knowle was Elizabeth’s brother Arthur COBB. This Uncle Arthur,  together with the majority of Arthur James’ relations, was employed in brickmaking.  With a brick works at the western end of Coombe Keynes village,  perhaps Arthur James had once considered joining his various uncles and numerous cousins to work in this local industry, but it would appear he first became a fisherman.

However, Arthur James’ father, David, had a brother, Charles, and there were close ties between the families of these two brothers, David and Charles, with  Reuben, the son of Charles, being born in 1858 in the same parish as his cousin, Arthur James.   Charles, his wife Tamar, and whoever of their twelve children were living at home at the time, moved many times in the years that followed as Charles, and three of his sons, David, Edmund and Alfred, all looked for work as Thatchers.  It would seem that at some time, when the need arose to change his occupation, Arthur James  realised that if he stayed in Dorset the only occupation available to him would be the one undertaken by his Uncle Charles.  But Arthur James did not want to be a Thatcher!

In 1876 David, the father of Arthur James died in Church Knowle, Dorset. As yet we do not know what happened to his mother but by 1881 the three sisters of Arthur James were in South Mimms, Hertfordshire,  St Pancras, Middlesex,  and Chipping Barnet, also in Hertfordshire, whilst his brother Amos Samuel was in Lambeth, Surrey working as a signalman. A daughter of Arthur James says that Amos was so enthusiastic about railways that he persuaded his brother to join him, so that by 1881 Arthur James was in Battersea, Surrey working as a Railway Labourer.  It was during the next few years that he lodged with  Matilda (née STEMP) SIMMONS who let rooms to railway workers to earn money after the desertion of her husband.  "Grannie" SIMMONS, as she was known, was visited by her cousin, Ruth WALLER, who was later to become the bride of Arthur James.

Arthur James did not stay long as a Labourer, for on the 11th June 1881, following the recommendation of the Engineering Department, he was employed as a Signalman at Mitcham Junction, the appointment being recorded as number 6876.  His employers were the London Brighton & South Coast Railway, and he was engaged at a weekly wage of £1.  1s.  0d.  In the next few years he worked in the signal boxes at Thornton Heath, Lower Norwood, West Norwood and York Road, Battersea Park.  His wages rose from the £1.  1s.  0d in 1881 by 2/-d in January 1882 and by a further 2/-d in 1889 by which time he was earning £1.  5s.  0d a week with clothing supplied by the Company.   In 1885 he had married Ruth.  His son, Arthur Oliver and his daughter, Agnes Olive, were born in 1886 and 1887 respectively so this amount had to support four people.

He supplemented his earnings by hard work growing vegetables, often helped by his younger daughter, Winifred, who remembers the vast number of rails which had to be crossed to reach the allotment.  Often she thought it safe as she could hear no trains, but her father would know that one was expected so they would wait.  Of the crops he grew a granddaughter particularly remembers the rhubarb, and the pies made from it by her grandmother.

Arthur James continued to be linked to Battersea Park, but worked at the Signal Box at Longhedge Junction with twelve other men.  His daughter also spent time in the signal box when she would “help” move the levers. Her father’s wages increased very slowly to £1. 11s. 0d and reached their maximum on the 14th June 1920 when he earned £3.  15s. 0d a week. Unfortunately, by the 1st July 1921 his earnings were reduced to £3. 14s. 0d, with a further reduction to £3.  10s. 0d by the 1st January 1922.

He remained employed when the London Brighton & South Coast Railway became part of the Southern Railway in 1924, but in the last years of his employment he worked at Clapham Junction Station in the Booking Office, an occupation not to his liking as he much preferrred being a Signalman

Campaign Medals:

Victory Medal

Given the information we have available it is likely that Thomas George HAYNES was entitled to the Victory medal, also called the Inter Allied Victory Medal. This medal was awarded to all who received the 1914 Star or 1914-15 Star and, with certain exceptions, to those who received the British War Medal. It was never awarded alone. These three medals were sometimes irreverently referred to as Pip, Squeak and Wilfred.

Eligibility for this award consisted of having been mobilised, fighting, having served in any of the theatres of operations, or at sea, between midnight 4th/5th August, 1914, and midnight, 11th/12th November, 1918. Women who served in any of the various military organisations in a theatre of operations were also eligible.

British War Medal

From the information available to us, it is very possible that Thomas George HAYNES was entitled to the British War Medal for service in World War One. This British Empire campaign medal was issued for services between 5th August 1914 and 11th November 1918.

The medal was automatically awarded in the event of death on active service before the completion of this period.

Regiment:  Suffolk Regiment

Suffolk Regiment during World War 1

Since 1815 the balance of power in Europe had been maintained by a series of treaties. In 1888 Wilhelm II was crowned ‘German Emperor and King of Prussia’ and moved from a policy of maintaining the status quo to a more aggressive position. He did not renew a treaty with Russia, aligned Germany with the declining Austro-Hungarian Empire and started to build a Navy rivalling that of Britain. These actions greatly concerned Germany’s neighbours, who quickly forged new treaties and alliances in the event of war. On 28th June 1914 Franz Ferdinand the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne was assassinated by the Bosnian-Serb nationalist group Young Bosnia who wanted pan-Serbian independence. Franz Joseph's the Austro-Hungarian Emperor (with the backing of Germany) responded aggressively, presenting Serbia with an intentionally unacceptable ultimatum, to provoke Serbia into war. Serbia agreed to 8 of the 10 terms and on the 28th July 1914 the Austro-Hungarian Empire declared war on Serbia, producing a cascade effect across Europe. Russia bound by treaty to Serbia declared war with Austro-Hungary, Germany declared war with Russia and France declared war with Germany. Germany’s army crossed into neutral Belgium in order to reach Paris, forcing Britain to declare war with Germany (due to the Treaty of London (1839) whereby Britain agreed to defend Belgium in the event of invasion). By the 4th August 1914 Britain and much of Europe were pulled into a war which would last 1,566 days, cost 8,528,831 lives and 28,938,073 casualties or missing on both sides.
