Notes for Mary TERRY:

When entering details for a Mary TERRY who married William MOSS I added an approximate birth date (I always do so that I can find people!)....

I entered about 1737 - ie 20 years before she married.  I then looked at my index....and there’s this Mary TERRY born about 1743....she would have been 14 at the marriage to William MOSS but as we have learned....such early marriages were possible at this date.  Her father Thomas was the brother of the Nicholas TERRY who married William's sister Mary MOSS

The next Mary birth was 1746 but she married George STROUD....she was daughter of Nicholas and Elizabeth PAY....

Do you think this Mary born 1743 could be the wife of William (MORSE) MOSS?

Notes for Mary (MORSE) MOSS:

Information from John TERRY 3/9/2013

A Will was sent to me from Allison on 14th April 2010, I was not able to place it at the time, but we have just revised this family on the 3rd September 2013 and I believe this will is the will of the sister of this Mary TERRY. I have included it in Mary TERRY née MOSS's notes as I do not, at the present time have enough information to go back another generation for Mary. If correct her sister Elizabeth married a SMITH but at the time of the will being written, which I think was in 1801 which was between when Mary's husband Nicholas died in 1793  and 1812 when Mary died, Elizabeth was living with Mary and wrote the following will; she appears to have died in 1809. I have included it here because of the number of names mentioned in it:

In the name of God Amen I Elizabeth SMITH of Ramsgate in the County of Kent Shopkeeper being of sound and disposing mind memory and understanding praised be God, do make this my last WiIll and Testament in the manner following (that is to say) .....

Our latter Days are burdensome Our Youth was sore oppressed Till Christ was pleased to call him hence To his Eternal Rest’ - The Old English long ’s’ was used in the words ’burdensome, oppressed and Christ’.

Second marriage and family details from G Welsh

The age of Sarah TERRY, when she was buried on the 22nd November 1815, is shown on the microfiche of the transcript of the burial register for St Peter, Broadstairs, Kent as 43 years. That would have made her birth year 1772.

If the age at death is correct she married at 14 and had her first child at 15.

More research required.

Information from Bob FEARS 22/9/2009

See the "Age of Marriage Act 1929". This raised the minimum age for marriage to 16. Previously, the minimum age had been 14 for males and 12 for females. This means that the above marriage can be correct and that there are also other, what we would now deem underage, marriages that may be valid

Information from web site of John TERRY 19/11/2013

There is a William DANTON (40) Ag Lab with William (15) and James (12) all born Kent

And ....the following entries are: Robert WELLS (82) Yeoman born Kent, Catherine WELLS (69) not born in Kent

-

Ann DANTON (17) F S born Kent

-

William BLOSLAND (35) Ag Lab born Kent ) This is the BLAXLAND/BLASTLAND family,

Elizabeth do (40) born Kent ) Elizabeth being the sister of this William

Isaac do (14) born Kent ) DANTON

-

Robert FAGG (17) Ag Lab born Kent

Having added this family I do not think it is our William Terry DANTON on the 1841 Census, so likely marriage and children incorrect, as William was still alive in 1851 with son James still living with him and we have his death down as 1845. After that James (who was blind) was living with a Samuel and Jane WEST as brother and if correct it must be Jane who he was a brother to married a Samuel WEST and this does not show on DANTON Chart 0600.

Information from John TERRY

A Karen HAYES née TERRY contacted me on 10th February 2007 about this family. Hopefully I will receive more information. I have found them on the 1851 Census which has allowed me to put on a Chart for the family. At some stage hopefully I will be able to continue the line to Karen. She also tells me her Grandmother was a Marion Alice FASHAM who married an Edward James TERRY. There are two other FASHAM families on this page of the Census, both down as Northdown.

Comments from John TERRY'S web site 1/9/2013

There are two William TERRY married to a Mary in Ramsgate, I have chosen this one as the ages given on the Censuses are nearer for this William than the other one, also this chart shows children, whereas the other one does not appear to have any, so if we are incorrect it just means deleting this chart and leaving the marriage on READ 0600. The one problem of course, now having put the chart on that the first two children were born before William and Mary married, but this could possibly mean that William had been married before he married Mary or Mary had had children before she married William, or they just did not marry until two children had been born.

John Maynard TERRY and his son John TERRY worked at, and lived next door to, the TOMSON and WOTTON Brewery in Queen Street, Ramsgate, Kent.

This famous Brewery had been established since the time of Elizabeth I and had been in Queen Street since the end of the 16th century. In 1635 the "messuage and dwelling house, malthouse, brewhouse, barns, stables and fifty acres of land" were sold for £250 and were finally acquired by the mariner, Thomas TOMSON in 1680. The WOTTON family became linked with the firm in 1854 during the years that John Maynard TERRY worked for the company.

TOMSON and WOTTON became one of the two largest breweries in East Kent before being taken over by Ind. Coope and finally being closed down in 1968.

In 1851 John Maynard TERRY his wife and seven children were living at 27 Queen Street, with William TOMSON Brewer and Maltster at number 28. William TOMSON had a wife and five children, and was looked after by five servants. By the December of 1851 John and his family were living at No. 28 although they had left by 1871.

This is very definitely Broad Street, so I have queried the Bread Street I have put on

the 1861 and 1871 Census as though both seem very clear, of course the name of the

Road could have changed or he could have moved from 10 Bread Street, where his

father lived to 10 Broad Street, when he married, but it does seem too much of a

coincidence to be this. I think it is the same property. I would have thought his father

had died by the 1881 Census and he had taken on the Whitesmith business as he was

employing 4 men and 3 boys.

1871        died age 75, born 1799

There is obviously some discrepancy about the ages of both John and his wife Jane.  It would seem that he was much older than her and so gave a later date for his birth, the actual year not being discovered until his death. Although fifteen years younger than his actual age does seem a considerable number of years!   She had made herself older for the 1861 census but then returned to her actual age for the 1871.

We were given a birth date of 28th December 1860 for a Thomas Terry DANTON son of Thomas Lindridge DANTON and Theodosia MOSS.

However, there is no 1859/1861 birth registered and there is no Thomas DANTON born 1860 on the 1861 census.  There is a December quarter 1861 Thomas death, no age given at this time, but if this was the death of the childreborn 28 December 1860 where was his birth and 1861 census entries?  There is a Thomas T DANTON on the 1871 census as a three year old son of Thomas and Theodosia so born about 1868 and there is a birth registered in this year.  At present we are therefore assuming that Thomas and Theodosia had just the one Thomas Terry DANTON son born 1868

Comment JKW 24/12/2013

Today I found the baptism of Thomas Terry DANTON and the date was the 28th December 1880 which perhaps goes some way to explaining the information we were sent.
