"SUICIDE AT BERMONDSEY

On Wednesday evening Mr. William CARTER coroner for East Surrey, held an inquiry at the St. George’s Tavern, Fort Road, Bermondsey, as to the death of John TERRY aged 49, by occupation a ship’s fireman, and lately residing at No. 6, Ridge Street, Bermondsey.

Mary Ann TERRY deposed that the deceased was her husband. He had not done any work since last October, through an affection of the spine brought on by overwork. In consequence of his inability to work, witness had to go out to work to maintain the family. This fact seemed to prey on the deceased’s mind, and he often remarked that he would not trouble witness much longer. On Monday night, (Bank Holiday), witness left him at home when she went out to nurse an invalid, and on returning home at 8 o’clock on Tuesday morning was alarmed at finding bedroom door locked. She called in a policeman and on an entrance being gained the deceased was found dead.

Police constable Edward GULLIVER 359 M, stated that he was called to 6, Ridge Street, by the last witness, and found the front room on the ground floor locked from the inside. Witness gained entrance to the room by the front, and on entering found the deceased in a sitting posture on the floor by the bedside, with a plaid scarf round his neck, the other end of which was fastened to the top rail of the bedstead. Witness cut the scarf and sent for medical aid, but on the arrival of the doctor, life was pronounced extinct.

The jury returned a verdict of suicide while mentally deranged.”

"All from Mrs J ROWE 20A Lord Cobham Ave, Whakatane (there is no J ROWE in Whakatane in the phone book any more)"

"Other details gleaned from conversations with Rita (Christmas 1994).

More to the WALKER line:

The original William Thomas WALKER (b:14 Feb 1846, d: 16 Nov 1914) was tall, with a beard. He died of cancer. Apparently he was half French, half English. His wife, Sarah Tenney WALKER, was originally called Sarah d'TENNEY, and can trace her family back to France during the revolution (they left at that time). Seems unlikely that this in the case - see below.  Rita was 14 when she died, and could remember her"

Louisa TENNEY died of Hemiplegia (A Stroke) & Exhaustion, dying in Lichfield Workhouse.  Louisa's father was a painter, Joseph GREGORY and her stepson Henry was a sign painter on the railways, I wonder if that is the connection. There was a Rugeley Medical Officer report in 1906 due to her death.

COULDN'T GET STRONG.

AFTER RHEUMATIC FEVER, .MRS. JANE TOOVEY, BALMAIN,

NEVER WALKED FOR 2 MONTHS. WHOLE HEALTH BROKE DOWN. AS WELL AS ANYONE TO-DAY. .

DR. WILLIAMS' PINK PILLS.

"For a long time after the Rheumatic Fever left me, my feet were swelled up, and my joints too sore to touch, said Mrs. Jane TOOVEY who lives at l8 Arthur Street, Balmain, Sydney. "It was all I could do to walk across my bedroom. You never saw anyone so weak. Nothing would build me up. I went down and down till I was just hanging on to life. Dr. Williams' Pink Pills are what I've got to thank for making me strong again. They gave me back my health and strength in less than six weeks.'

"If I live for 100 years, I won't forget my attack of Rheumatic Fever," said Mrs. TOOVEY. "And I caught it so simple, too. I got soaking wet when I was hanging out the clothes after a big wash. That was on the Wednesday. Come Saturday, I took to my bed, for I had such awful pains in my legs that I couldn't stand. The doctor said at once that I had Rheumatic Fever. I was hot and cold by turns, and the perspiration just poured off me. They built a blazing fire in my room, and covered me up with blankets, but that didn't ease the pain. When I tried to turn over, it darted right into my knee. I screamed with the agony. The joint swelled up, and was so tender I daren't let the bed-clothes rest on It. There wasn't a joint in my body that didn't get swollen and stiff in its turn with the terrible pain. It got down from my wrists into my fingers. It made me wince if anyone even came near me. I daren't so much as move, for, so sure as I did, the torture nearly drove me crazy. Day and night, for two months, it never eased up on me. Every one of my bones felt as if they had been broken. My body was hot as fire. At last, the pain got the better of me altogether. I went clean off my head, and raved like a mad woman.

"The fever burnt itself out at last, and the doctor got me up off my bed again. But it hadn't done with me as I found out. When the weather was at all cold; my joints got stiff, and my arms and legs felt sore and battered. My foot and ankles swelled up. Some times they were that inflamed and tender to the touch, I couldn't get my slippers on. And when a twinge of the old pain took me in the knee, I was in mortal dread that it was all coming back on me again. For a long time, I had to help myself about the room by hanging on to the chairs and table.

"No one could have made me believe that Rheumatic Fever would leave anyone so weak and wretched. You never saw such a pitiful sight. My eyes were sunk back in my head, and there wasn't an atom of colour in my lips and face. I was never what you would call warm - the cold got into my feet, and there it stayed. Even on a hot day, I couldn't get my blood moving. It was no bettor than water. The fever had taken all the warmth out of my body, and nothing they could do for me built me up. My meals were no good to me. The very smell of cooking made me sick. I ate no more than just kept the bare life in me.

"How I kept alive the way I was going I don't know. I was as helpless as a baby. My knees were knocking together with weakness. I didn't care if I never moved hand or foot - I was so miserable and worn out. Not many women would have struggled on like I did, for my back was always aching - just a dull heavy pain, nagging at me. It was no use my trying to help in the house - I was only in the way. If I helped with anything for even a few minutes, I was ready to drop. I was that dizzy at times, I never knew the moment I'd turn faint and tumble over. In fact, one day I nearly fell downstairs. My legs gave way all of a sudden. My heart started to flutter, and everything went swimming round and round. I had to be carried to my room and put to bed. There I lay just able to breathe, and that's all.

"My daughter, Mrs. MAY, was in a great way about me. As a very last hope, she got me to take Dr. Williams' Pink Pills. She said if anything would build me up again, they would. I had hardly got through one box when I began to eat well. That soon made me pick up heart again. I kept taking Dr. Williams' Pink Pills steady, for I could see them doing me good every day. All the dull aches left me. Before long the swelling went out of my feet, and has not come back since I'm as strong and healthy now as ever I've been in my llfe. It was those 8 boxes of Dr. Williams' Pink Pills that gave me new life, and drove every trace of the Rheumatlc Fever out of me."

"Dr. Williams' Pink Pills for Pale People can never fail to cure, because they go right in the root of the trouble in the blood. Bad blood is the cause of all common dlseases like anaemla (bloodlessness), eczema, paleness, headaches, neuralgia, sciatica, rheumatlsm, lumbago, backache, kidney complaint, liver trouble, biliousness, indigestion, general weakness, and the special ailments that only women-folk know. Bad blood is the one cause - and Dr. Williams' Pink Pills are the one cure, because they actually make new blood. They do just that one thing, but they do it well. But, of course you must get the genuine Dr. Williams' Pink Pills for Pale People - 2s 0d a box, six boxes 15s 3d, from chemists and storekeepers, or sent, post free, by the Dr. Williams' Medicine Co., Sydney. Medical advice given, and proper diets recommended to all correspondents free of charge.

An Old Resident's Testimony,

After Effects of Rheumatic Fever Cured

"I have been living at No. 13 Arthur Street, Balmain, for the past thirteen years," said Mrs. Jane Toovey, to our reporter, "and anybody in that neighborhood could tell you what a wreck I was three years after I settled there. It was rheumatic fever that was the cause of it, and when I tell you that for four months I was suffering from that dreadful complaint, you can form an idea what a bad effect it had on my constitution generally."

"No doubt your internal organs were greatly upset?"

"Fearfully so: my liver and kidneys being in a very had state, and I was so low and weak that I could scarcely crawl about. But as well as being so feeble, I had pains of the most excruciating character to put up with, particularly in my head, which was never free from them. And there was an intensity about those pains which was enough to destroy one's reason - an incessant ache, ache, ache, that took so much out of me that I hadn't the power left to do even the lightest of work. What made matters worse, too, was not being able to sleep, for several nights in succession passed, and would find myself awake all the time. Needless to say, that this helped to wear me out more and more, and the pitiful part of it all was that the medicines I had taken, in the hope of acquiring relief from my burden of suffering, were quite ineffective. I could have left them alone, for all the good they did me. Giddy turns came on frequently, and it was quite a common thing for me to be feeling all right one moment and the next to be in a dead faint. A strange sensation would steal itself over me. and I'd gradually find myself losing self-control, and I would know no more till the faintness passed, and consciousness was regained. Oh! I used to dread these attacks, for I felt sure I would one day pass away in that manner. And talk about being nervous, I was something terrible, any sounds causing me to start, and I would tremble excessively. Besides this, I was excitable in the extreme, and so fretful that the least thing would upset me for hours. What worried me to no small extent was the way my heart used to behave. It would start beating so violently as to suggest the possibility of jumping out of its place, and then die right away, as if going to stop, to be followed by those nasty fainting feelings that I dreaded so much. And so my miserable life continued until I chanced to get into touch with Clements Tonic which I can truthfully speak of as the best I have ever taken in all my experience."

"More effective than the doctors?"

"Infinitely. as nothing but Clements Tonic released me from the awful depression of spirits I labored under. and the head pains that I had endured so long. It was splendid, too, for making me eat, which was something new, as my appetite had been non-existent for months. I had also been feeling severe pains across the small of my back. about my shoulders and chest, too: but with the advent of Clements Tonic I gained ease rapidly, and soon was free from all my- old torments. And when my nights became more peaceful, and the heart troubles began to disappear, I was relieved of a load of care that I was glad to get rid of. But what caused most surprise was the way I threw. off my- nervousness. It was marvellous; for not long before I was always shaking and timorous in mind and would not stay in the house alone for all the tea in China, and after using several bottles of Clements Tonic I was as right as the bank. Not only had I gained in those respects, but I was acquiring strength daily, and soon felt as well as ever, with not an ailment went left unconquered."

"Well, If you have no objection to seeing your experience in print, we will make use of. them?"

"Nothing- gives me greater pleasure than to tell folks what a wonderful medicine Clements Tonic is, so you are at liberty to publish all I've said, in any form you think best. I know that Clements Tonic cured me when I was very weak and iII, and I know it can do the same- for others, so do what you like with my recommendation."

STATUTORY DECLARATION.

* I JANE TOOVEY, of 18 Arthur Street Balmain, in the State of New South Wales Commonwealth of Australia do solemnly and sincerely declare that I have carefully read the annexed document and that it contains and is a true and faithful account of my illness and cure by Clements Tonic and also contains my full permission to publish in any way my statements - which I give voluntarily, without receiving any payment ; and I make this solemn declaration conscientiously believing the same to be true. and by virtue af the provisions of the Oath Act, 1908.

On the 1911 census Florence is shown as having had 3 children, 2 were still living and one had died.

On the actual Census Frederick TERRY has been entered, then 18 hours. So we assume he died at this age, but we had no idea of his birth date. However he has been shown as the second child as there is a birth in December quarter of 1898 for a Frederick Charles TERRY in St Olave district London and a death in December quarter 1898 of a Frederick Charles TERRY in St Olave district London aged 0 so I think this is likely to be this child.

There is a birth of a Florence Catherine TERRY in December quarter 1901 in Camberwell district who could be this child. Age on 1911 states 11 so birth should be in 1900 not 1901, there are no births that come up for a Florence in London in 1900.

However of the 1562 employees, who in 1898 at the time of the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria received a box of biscuits, only the names of about 100 with salaries of about between £120 and £500 a year were entered in the ledgers.

I remember them quite well even if I didn't meet them much and I remember Sarah as being quite a strict lady and poor grandfather was kept in his place in the kitchen and at that time I think he was a sort of gardener/handyman and they lived at 23 Beverley Road, Chiswick.

Ada (known as Dolly) never married and looked after him until his death.    She worked for the Cherry Blossom Boot Polish company in Chiswick as a personnel officer until her retirement when she sold up and moved to Deal in Kent to be near her two sisters who had both retired down there.     Both Lilian and Annie were Secretaries who married their bosses.    I spent quite a bit of my  childhood with each of them as my Mother preferred to work and they had money and we hadn't.

From what I knew Lilian only had one child (a boy) who died as a baby and the mention of another one comes as quite a shock.    I think it must also have died very young as I never met anyone else and no-one was ever spoken about.

Nancy had one girl - Elizabeth - who was about six months older than me and she caught some sort of liver disease from her Nanny and died very young.    Nancy then half adopted me and I spent many years with them to go to private schools!!

They are all (Nancy, Percy and Elizabeth) buried at Little Missenden church in Buckinghamshire and Percy donated a lych-gate for the cemetery in memory of Elizabeth and a bell, font and stained glass window (in memory of the second world war) to the church.    They were very close friends of the vicar at that time and he discovered a very old painting on the wall of the church (under the plaster) and the little church has a wonderful history and if you ever get the chance do visit it.

AGNES TERRY née BINGHAM - 1875-1950

Local newspaper (Carshalton area) report of inquest of Agnes TERRY née BINGHAM on 16th July 1950.

"Driver had no chance - Woman stepped into lorry’s path

Evidence that Mrs Agnes TERRY of 18 Acre Lane, Carshalton, stumbled while stepping off the kerb in High Street, Carshalton, on July 14, and fell into the path of an oncoming lorry, the driver of which had no chance of avoiding her, was given by Mrs Ann HUTCHINGS of 76, High Street, Carshalton, at the inquest into Mrs TERRY's death held at Kingston on Friday.

The verdict was accidental death.

Dr. R. PEARCE pathologist, said Mrs TERRY was suffering from advance heart disease as well as arthritis. Mrs TERRY's ribs and breastbone had been broken, but she might have recovered from these injuries if her heart had been sound.

The driver of the lorry Alfred Cecil GOFF of Brixton, holder of a first-class driving certificate after 30 years experience said Mrs TERRY walked out from between two stationary vehicles.

War Medal 1939-1945

As with most Armed Forces Serving Personal during the conflict of World War Two, Jack TENNEY was entitled to the War Medal 1939-1945. This medal was awarded to all full time service personnel who had completed 28 days service between 3rd September 1939 and the 2nd September 1945. Eligible personnel who had been “Mentioned In Despatches” during the War were entitled to wear a bronze oak leaf emblem on the ribbon. Those eligible for a campaign star, yet who had their service cut short by death, wounds or capture by the enemy, still qualified for this medal.

1939-45 Star

Given the information available to us it is likely that Jack TENNEY was awarded the 1939-45 Star for operational Service in the Second World War between 3rd September 1939, and 2nd September 1945.

Jack TENNEY would have been awarded this star if their service period was terminated by their death or disability due to service. Also the award of a gallantry medal or “Mention In Despatches” also produced the award of this medal, regardless of their service duration.

Fighter Aircraft Crew who took part in the Battle of Britain (10 July to 31 October 1940) were awarded the "Battle of Britain" bar to this medal. In undress uniform, a silver-gilt rosette was worn on the medal ribbon to denote the award of this clasp.

Service:  British Army

Regiment:  Coldstream Guards

Coldstream Guards during World War 2

Formed: 1670

The Regiment was first formed in 1650 at Berwick, Northumberland as ‘Monck’s Regiment of Foot’ during the English Civil War, by Colonel George Monck as part of the English Parliamentarian forces. It was soon in action at the Battle of Dunbar, where the New model Army of Oliver Cromwell defeated a Scottish army loyal to King Charles II, who was proclaimed King of Scots and attempted to regain the throne taken from his father.

The Regiment remained in Scotland until the abdication of Richard Cromwell (son of Oliver Cromwell) in 1659. Colonel Monck crossed his Regiment into England at the village of Coldstream and made a five week march to London in order to support the restoration of the Stuart Monarchy. Colonel Monck was awarded the Order of the Garter for his support and the Regiment was assigned to keep order in London. In January 1661 a serious uprising occurred in London when 50 ‘Fifth Monarchists’, attempted to take possession of London in the name of ‘King Jesus.’ The Regiment was deployed and quashed the riots. After this the King wished to retain the Regiment for his personal security; however he already had a bodyguard Regiment, formed during his exile in 1656 as the 1st Regiment of Foot Guards, which subsequently became the Grenadier Guards. In 1661 the Regiment symbolically laid down their arms as part of the New Model Army and were immediately ordered to take them up again as the Royal Regiment of ‘The Lord General's Regiment of Foot Guards’.

Being the older Regiment it should have had seniority in the Household Troops but was placed as the second senior Regiment, after the 1st Regiment of Foot Guards. Subsequently it adopted the motto Nulli Secundus (Second to None), and always stands on the left of the line when on parade with rest of the Foot Guards. In 1670 when Colonel Monck died, the Earl of Craven took command and the Regiment adopted the new name of Coldstream Regiment of Foot Guards. The Regiment went on to serve during the Monmouth Rebellion in 1865, when the 1st Duke of Monmouth (and the King’s nephew) unsuccessfully attempted to overthrow the unpopular King James II, fighting at the decisive Battle of Sedgemoor. It also went on to serve during the Nine Years War (1688–97) against the French fighting at the Battle of Walcourt, the Battle of Landen and the Siege of Namur.

The Regiment went on to serve during the Seven Years War (1754–1763) fighting at the Battle of Wilhelmstal and at the Castle of Arnoneberg. It also served during the American War of Independence ((1775–1783), the French Revolution (1789–1799) and the Napoleonic Wars (1803–1815). It was part of the unsuccessful Walcheren Expedition (1809) during the War of the Fifth Coalition and was also fought at the chateau of Hougoumont as part of the Battle of Waterloo (1815). The defence of Hougoumont is considered one of the greatest achievements of the Regiment. Corporal James Graham and Lt-Col James Macdonnell led the closing of the farmhouse gates which helped to successfully hold the ground with few men and aided The Duke of Wellington to win the Battle of Waterloo, as a Napoleon diverted his troops to the area. In 1855 the Regiment adopted the title of The Coldstream Guards and then went on to serve during the Second Boer War and two World Wars.
