Descendants of Anthony STEMP

Generation No. 1

1.  Anthony1 STEMP was born Abt. 1522 in Horsham, Sussex, and died 1589 in "householder".  He married (1) Dowsable or Agnes UNKNOWN wife of Anthony STEMP.  She was born Abt. 1527, and died December 1565 in "uxor".  He married (2) Joan HILL October 13, 1566 in Horsham, Sussex.  She was born Abt. 1546, and died March 1575/76 in age 31 "uxor Antonii STEMPE".  He married (3) Joanne/Johan/Jane AGATE May 19, 1577 in Rusper, Sussex (possible marriage see notes).  She was born Abt. 1558, and died Unknown.

Will of Anthony STEMPE (Details from Janet ALLEN)

"Antony describes his wife as Joan and he was worried about the friction between her and is eldest son Henry.  He left property - Turners and Muttons in Roffey.  This was I believe part of St Leonard's Forest then." The Will mentions two siblings, John and Thomas, who were not traceable in the records.

Notes using the information from Janet ALLEN to Margaret JARVIS giving explanation for the decision that Anthony was Thomas's father.

1.  It is known Anthony married at least twice as one of his wives, Joan, was buried on 28th March 1576 and he had children after this date.

Who do we know are his wives?

.......He married Joan HILL on the 13 October 1566 in Horsham.  The only Joan HILL in the parish records was christened 4th April 1545 daughter of Richard and Elizabeth HILL

.......The mother of the later children was another Joan.   For him to have married Joan AGATE on the 19th May 1577 at Rusper would fit as one of the executors of his Will was Richard AGATE.

2.  Re-looking at the Will, it is noticeable that Anthony did not leave monies to either John or Thomas, but to their two sons both John.  Presumably John and Thomas were "set up" as they had married.  Did Joan HILL supply the money to buy the property?  Anthony left Turners to Henry, and if he had no issue to James and William, and only then to Thomas.  (Thomas must have been the "eldest" son).

3.  So, is it therefore feasible that Thomas and John were children by a first marriage which may or may not have happened in Horsham (The records are so bad!)  I believe there are two possible options:

.......Agnes, godmother to Agnes NIGHTINGALL 3rd November 1560 or

.......Dowsable, buried 28th December 1565

Anthony could have had by his first wife:

         Thomas

John who married Margaret (but where?)

Agnes - possible, who was the mother of the base borne Anthony

         Robert?

During 2009 Linda LACEY has worked hard in an endeavour to obtain a transcript of Anthony's Will as up until this time we have just had the above notes.  Hopefully I shall be able to include the transcription here in the future.  In the meantime, Linda has sent the following summary:

Dowsable's son Thomas gets £4 10s, and his son John is 4th in line for the house and land and gets 10s.

Dowsable's son John gets nothing, is he dead or is he the John STEMPE married to Margaret?  If so, has he fallen out with his father?  His son John is left 10s.

Joan HILL's daughter, Margaret, gets 40s.  Joan HILL's son Harry/Henry gets the house and land known as Turners and Muttons (which is leased - though it doesn't say who from), plus some other land.

Joan AGATE's son James is second in line for the house and land, plus £5, then at the end of the will he gives him 20s more.  Her son William is third in line for the house and land, plus £5 and then the extra 20s.  Elizabeth and Alice/Alce get 40s each.

The interesting bit is the apparent bad feeling between Henry and Joan AGATE.  Anthonie says that " for the avoyding of all other trouble and inconveniencies that may happen to be betwene my wife and my said sonne Henry my mynde and will is that they two shall dwell and keep house together and bear all the charges of horse keeping and husbandrie alike in the farm that I have now in lease for certeine years yet to come".

He goes on to say that if they "cannot well agre together" or if she marries, then they have to organise paying his debts and legacies.

Joan was probably not too pleased to have an 18 year old living with her, presumably as the head of the household, and inheriting in preference to her children.  Seeing that she married again in 1591, they didn't have to put up with each other for too many years.

21 December 1009

Linda LACEY has spent a considerable amount of time transcribing the Will of Anthony with help from the Archivist at the West Sussex Record Office.  Her transcription is as follows:

Notes Respecting Halnaker, Boxgrove etc P225  Boxgrove Manor - The Rev William TURNER, vicar of Boxgrove, informs me that 'the family of STEMPE (or STAMPE) as the name is now splet) are mentioned in the earliest documents relating to the parish, and have left it only about 12 months ago. They retain a house and some little land'.  This name was formerly widely spread in both divisions of the county, which indicated an early settlement of the family in Sussex, and renders it probable that they sprang from the ancient Norman family of ESTAMPES.  Well that's interesting. (I don't know who the author was or when he was writing, but if one finds the Rev TURNER that would give a clue).

Information from David STEMP

In 1562 Thomas STEMPE was mentioned as living on land belonging to Thomas HALL in the parishes of Ffiltelworth and Eggden.

However, Margaret JARVIS does not believe that the Thomas at Fittleworth in 1562 is the same Thomas who married Joanne PULLEN in Horsham in 1572

Thomas received £4.10s in the Will of his father Anthony STEMPE whilst his son John is 4th in line for the house and land and gets 10s.

xi.    William STEMP, b. Abt. 1733, Ewhurst, Surrey; d. November 1734, "son of Thomas".

Notes for William STEMP:

Janet KELSEY wonders if the William baptised in 1733 is, in fact, the son of Thomas and Ann, as if Ann was baptised on the 2nd February1684 (the date originally shown on this chart for Ann’s baptism) she would have been close to 50 years old.  Apparently there were 3 Ann ANSELLs, baptised 1699 (Wonersh) and 1684 and 1697 both in Ewhurst.  The 1697 and 1699 dates were considered to make her too young to marry in 1711.

As, in the Parish Register the baptism of William is entered in a similar format to that of the previous children, he has been included on this chart, and the baptism date for Ann ANSELL omitted.  However, Janet suggests that the answer to the age of Ann problem could be that it was son Thomas (Chart 0803) who could have been the father of William. There is no mother’s name in the register.

Marriage Notes for James STEMP and Elizabeth NAPPER:

In the Alfold Parish Registers there is also a marriage on the 13th October 1778  (witnesses John GIBBS and Jane EAGER) for a James STEMP and Elizabeth NAPPER. Margaret JARVIS suggests that if a couple moved to another parish and could not prove they were married, they had to have another ceremony.  On the other hand, in "The Parish Chest", when referring to Settlement conditions W E TATE states that subsequent marriages took place if the bride and groom were not 21 years old at the time of the previous ceremony.  If baptised near his birth date, James would have been 20 years  in December 1777.

There are two Robert STEMPs born in 1779, the one shown in this family born in Dunsfold, Surrey and the Robert STEMP, son of Robert and Martha (née MERCER) STEMP born in Cranley, Surrey.  Ann HOLZ believes that Robert, the son of Robert and Martha, married Mary LUCAS in Alfold, Surrey in 1809.  However, Margaret JARVIS thinks that the Robert born in Dunsfold, Surrey, and belonging to this family, was more likely to be the one to marry in Alfold.  Further comments are awaited from Ann HOLZ.

24.  Harry7 STEMP (John6, Thomas STIMPS or5, Robert STIMP/STIMPS/STEMP/STEMPT or4, Thomas STIMPS or STEMPS or3, Thomas STYMPE or STEMPE or2, Anthony1) was born Abt. 1747 in Possible Henry, see notes., and died September 1820 in Warnham, Sussex Age 72.  He married Elizabeth CHARMAN April 30, 1771 in Warnham, Sussex (Possible marriage).  She was born Abt. 1754, and died July 1823 in Warnham, Sussex Age 69.

Notes for Harry STEMP:

Harry's brother, John married Ann LEE 5 December 1768 in Ewhurst, Surrey.  They baptised children in Warnham, Sussex in March 1773 and October 1775.

A Henry STEMP and his wife Elizabeth baptised a daughter in July 1775 between the above dates, also in Warnham, Sussex.

Perhaps Henry and Harry are the same man

And in 1781, John - who I think is this Harry/Henry's brother - and his wife had a daughter Martha. And in 1801 a Martha STEMP is witness at the marriage of a daughter of Harry/Henry, followed by Martha's own marriage in 1803.

In order that this can be researched I have included the the information about Henry and his descendants here with the idea that it is an extremely provisional connection.

SHOCKING CASE OF BURNING

An inquest was held at the Queen Victoria, Ealing Green on Wednesday afternoon before Dr. DIPLOCK, on the body of Ann STEMP who was burnt to death on Monday evening last, (16th Jan,1871).  Mr. SACH having been elected foreman, the following evidence was taken:-

Caroline STEMP said:- "I am a single woman and lived with my mother in The Grove. Deceased was my mother, who was 76 years of age. She was a widow. On Monday night, about ten minutes past six, I returned home having left my mother alone some time before. I saw her in the street after I left home and spoke to her. When I returned home some time after six I found her lying near the door, quite dead. The door was locked, mind the key was left on the table for me as usual. My mother had been poorly ever since Sunday. I got in with my own key which I carried with me. There was a little fire in the grate, but no candle. There was no confusion in the room whatever.  There was no matches about the house."

By a juryman : " The fire was composed of coal. My mother was not subject to fits. I knew her to have one about five years ago."

Mr. H . WILKINS, surgeon said " I saw deceased on Monday evening about a quarter past six when I found she was quite dead and had been for some time. She was burnt very severely about the chest, arms, face and head. I noticed a chair near the fire and I have no doubt her clothes caught by the fire and that she went towards the door where she fell. There is no doubt death was caused by suffocation before she was severely burnt."

The Coroner said there was no doubt from the evidence that the death of the deceased was caused accidentally. The probabilities were that the deceased was sitting by the grate when her clothes caught fire either from a spark or from coming into contact with the flames and that she then went towards the door, and was overcome by the smoke.

The jury at once returned a verdict of "Accidental Death".

There is considerable confusion surrounding this family.

There are two Robert STEMPs, one baptised 31October 1779 in Dunsfold Surrey son of James and Elizabeth (née RANGER), the other baptised 28 November 1779 in Cranley, Surrey son of Robert and Martha (née MERCER).

Ann HOLZ believes that Robert, the son of Robert and Martha, married Mary LUCAS in Alfold, Surrey in 1809. However, Margaret JARVIS thinks that the Robert born in Dunsfold, Surrey, was more likely to be the one to marry in Alfold.

Information from Janet KELSEY shows George, Leonard and William as sons of this Robert and Mary LUCAS.

Margaret JARVIS states that George was the son of Robert and Eliza (this is the information on the transcript of the Baptism register), and she believes that the parents of Leonard and William are another Robert and Mary.

Until such time as we find details on Census Returns of the family of a George and Eliza, and another Robert and Mary the suspect information is included in this family

Information from Ann HOLZ

In 1847 Robert lived up an alley just about opposite the road leading to Knowle.  Just near the first public house from the common

NANHURST, CRANLEY, SURREY

At least 5 of the children of James STEMP and Charlotte STEMP née OVERTUN were born at Nanhurst, Cranley, Surrey.  Surely not in the following premises!

Nanhurst was situated 1½ miles from Cranleigh and the property, with garden, well-timbered grounds and park, consisted of about 79¾ acres when sold by Auction on the 15th October 1931.

This freehold residential property was on a quiet country road and the house was approached from a substantially built Lodge along a gravelled drive ending in a wide carriage sweep.  The building was an excellent reproduction of the architecture of the Queen Anne period, constructed of brick with tiled roof and deep cornice.

The rooms included the following : Vestibule, Lounge Hall, Cloak Room, Drawing Room, Veranda, Morning Room, Billiard Room or Library, Smoking Room, Dining Room (with service lobby with two large cupboards), Domestic Office comprising Housekeeper’s Rooms with cupboards and drawers, Butler’s pantry with sink (h & c) oak cupboards, serving hatch from Kitchen, plate safe, Store Room, Kitchen with range and boiler, Scullery with two sinks (h & c), two cool Larders, Game Larder, Servant’s Hall with grate and cupboard and second Store Room.  Outside there was a Brushing Room, Coal Store and Servants’ WC whilst below there was cellarage and the central heating furnace which warmed the radiators in the principal rooms.

There were two staircases, the main one being oak, 5 foot wide, going from the Lounge Hall to the oak Gallery Landing.  On the first floor there were 8 Principal Bed and Dressing rooms and 2 best bathrooms. There was a Heated Linen Closet and W.C. In the wing and on the second floor there were 5 other bedrooms, a third bathroom, and then 13 Attic Rooms as well as Tank Room, W.C and a room “with pipes”.

In addition there were garages, chauffeur’s quarters, stabling, the lodge and a detached cottage for the head gardener.  Water was laid on, electricity generated by a private plant and drainage to a cesspool.

ALMSHOUSES

James and Charlotte had 4 of their children in an Almshouse.

The Almshouses in Cranleigh could be found on the right of Malthouse Lane, now known as Church Lane, the road beside the Church.

The building consisted of 6 cottages which had been erected in the fifteen hundreds and which were demolished before 1885 when the Lady Peek Institute was built

Children of James STEMP and Charlotte OVERTUN are:

                 i.    James9 STEMP, b. Abt. 1812; d. July 1833, Almshouse, Cranley, Surrey age 21.

Notes for James STEMP:

Janet KELSEY believes that this James was not buried in 1833 but went on to marry and have children. His burial is shown on this chart as his death took place in the "Almshouse" where this family were living at the time. However, a Mary STEMP gave birth in the Workhouse to another James, baptised 10th January 1812, who could have been the James who died. See Chart 0603 for further comments.
