Notes for Edmund SANDFORD:

Notes on trying to determine the relationship between the Edmund SANDFORDs,

This has been written because the information entered for this family is speculative and needs to be researched further to find proof for the conclusions drawn.

FACT -

Edmund SANDFORD (b 1773) married Ann Elizabeth WALTER (b1781) in Marylebone, Middlesex

They had Sophia (b1808) and Harriett (b 1809) both baptised in Marylebone

FACT -

Ann SANDFORD (b1781) was living in Marylebone, Middlesex in 1841 together with Edmund STANFORD (b1826) and Sarah STANFORD (b1821), both born in Middlesex.

QUERY -

Was this 1841 Ann SANDFORD (b1781) the same person as Ann Elizabeth WALTER (b1781) wife of Edmund SANDFORD (b1773)?

FACT -

Edmund Robert SANDFORD (bc1822 Middlesex) married Sarah HUMPHREY or HUMPHERY in 1845 in Kensington and in 1861 they were living in Marylebone, Middlesex.  The father of Edmund Robert was another Edmund SANDFORD

QUERY -

Was Edmund Robert SANDFORD (bc 1822) the same Robert who was living with Ann (bc 1781) in Marylebone in 1841. together with Sarah (bc1821)?

FACTS -

Edmund SANDFORD (b1773) and Ann Elizabeth WALTER (b1781) had a daughter Harriet Welbey SANDFORD (b1809) who married James POWELL.  They had a daughter Harriet who married Peter OTTLEY.....

Edmund Robert SANDFORD and Sarah HUMPHREY had a daughter Caroline SANDFORD (b1850 Marylebone). In 1871 she was living with the family of Harriett OTTLEY, the daugter of Harriett POWELL née SANDFORD (b1809) as "cousin". (Caroline later married Harriett's brother-in-law, Matthew POWELL).

QUERY -

How are the two families, that of Edmund SANDFORD (b1773) and Ann Elizabeth WALTER(b1781) and that of Edmund Robert SANDFORD (bc1822) and Sarah HUMPHREY connected?

POSSIBLE CONCLUSIONS

1.  The Ann SANDFORD (bc1781) on the 1841 census is Ann Elizabeth SANDFORD née WALTER wife of

     Edmund SANDFORD (b1773)

2.  Edmund Robert SANDFORD (bc1822-1826) and Sarah SANDFORD (bc 1821) who are with an Ann

SANDFORD (bc 1781) on the 1841 are the children of Edmund SANDFORD (b1773) and Ann Elizabeth

     SANDFORD née WALTER (b1781)

This would make the relationship between Harriet OTTLEY and Caroline SANDFORD that of first

cousins as their mother and father would have been brother and sister.

3,  However, Ann Elizabeth SANDFORD née WALTER had children in 1808 and 1809 so it seems rather a

long gap from 1809 until 1821 and 1826 before Sarah and Edmund Robert were born.  So, perhaps

there was another Edmund (bc1801) making another generation in between that of Edmund (b1773)

     and Edmund Robert (b1822/1826).

As we have no information about an Edmund born about 1801, at present it has been decided to conclude that Edmund Robert SANDFORD born about 1822/1826 was the son of Edmund SANDFORD (b1722) and Ann Elizabeth WALTER (b1781).  More research required

On the 1911 census Rebecca is shown as having had 11 children, 6 survive and 5 had died.  We have now found 11 children, with deaths for 5.

She is also shown, although a widow, as being 64 years old and married 46 years, which suggests she married at 18 years old.

However, she was born 8 August 1846 and married 10 September 1871 which would have made her 25 years old at her marriage.

Having married in 1871 she would have been married 40 years by 1911, not 46 as shown on the 1911 census.

Ridge Street, Bermondsey, Surrey

Ridge Street was to be found within an area in Bermondsey bordered by Southwark Park Road to the north, the South East & Chatham Railway to the east, Lynton Road to the south and Jamaica Road to the West.  It was a turning from the east side of Camilla Road, about 6 houses south of,  and running parallel to, Southwark Park Road.

From the map it would seem that Ambrose Street (another turning from Southwark Park Road) and Camilla Road were not parallel to each other which probably left a small area between them, and it is in this small area that Ridge Street can be found.  It was a very short street, consisting of perhaps seven houses and was built in the early 1870s, the name being approved in 1871.

In 1881, the Census showed that one, at least, of the houses in Ridge Street was the home for two families.  One family (by the name of TERRY) consisted of a wife with nine children and a lodger, and the other a husband and wife with their two children.  In 1893, of the seven houses, five owners are included in the electoral register.  Of these, three took lodgers.  In No.2, two rooms were let for 4/6d, at No.6, two rooms were let for 6/6d and at No.7, two rooms were let for 4/9d.  All the rooms to let were on the first floor and all were unfurnished.

On the 23rd August, 1874 Charles Henry POWELL and Matilda GEORGE, our maternal great-grandparents, were married at St. James, Bermondsey and they both gave their address as 2 Ridge Street, Bermondsey.  The POWELLs, by December 1874, had moved to nearby Park Terrace, also off Camilla Road.

Sometime between the 17th March 1873 and the 2nd August 1875 John and Sarah TERRY, our paternal great grand-parents, moved to 6 Ridge Street, Bermondsey.

The two families, the POWELLs and the TERRYs, therefore. certainly lived in the same area at the same time, and if the TERRYs moved to Ridge Street early in the 1873/1875 period, the families would have been living next-door-but-one to each other.

The POWELL family moved to Battersea by 1877 from where they went to Tooting.  The TERRYs seemed to have stayed in Bermondsey until at least the early 1890s, but by 1908 they were also living in Tooting.

In the mid-nineteen twenties, the granddaughter of Charles and Matilda POWELL and the grandson of John and Sarah TERRY met at the Methodist Central Hall in  Tooting.  They, Olive Kathleen POWELL and Charles Fraser TERRY subsequently married in 1932, and were our parents.

Oh!  How we wish we had begun researching our family roots earlier and then perhaps our unanswered questions would be answered!  Did the families know each other in Bermondsey?  Did they keep in touch when they moved to Tooting?  Were there kindly grandparents keeping an eye on the blossoming romance between the young people in the two families?

Or was it all just chance?

Letter from Mrs Florence CARPENTER 31 May 1984

"He was a scaffold foreman for a building contractor and responsible for the safety of the erections/  No one was at work on the Christmas Eve because there was a very thick flog, but an Inspector insisted on being taken up very much against Granddad's better judgement.  According to the Inspector's evidence at the inquest Granddad lost his bearings in the fog on the way down and fell off the unfinished scaffold.  That was his story because he wanted to reduce the firm's liability for inspecting in a thick fog, for compensation purposes".

Letter from Mrs Florence CARPENTER 17 May 1984

"During the First World War Matilda POWELL went to work at Chipstead Golf Club.  Albert POWELL was in the Army so Agnes POWELL went with her daughter Olive to Chipstead out of the Zeppelin raids.  Granddad went at weekends and did the donkey work, Grandma did the cooking and dishing up and Aggie waited at table and if I behaved myself I was alloed to take in the cheese course, half a small Cheddar wrapped in a serviette, and a tin of cheese biscuits, which were served to every table.  My family had a lot to thank Aggie for, she was always there in a time of family crisis".

Letter from Mrs Florence CARPENTER 31 May 1984

"Matilda had a confectionery and tobacco shop with Uncle Charlie at Earlsfeld.  Very capable person and very much the matriarch all her life.  She brought up her mother's family and had a sizeable family of her own and in her old age was a housekeeper to Uncle Charlie and his family.  Wherever help was needed she was always there.  We were all scared of her when we were children but I had a lot of compassion for her in her old age"

Marriage Notes for Caroline SANDFORD and Matthew POWELL:

Matthew John POWELL gives his father’s name as William James POWELL, Labourer deceased.  His father’s name was actually James, and his brother, who was a witness, was William James.  Although there is this discrepancy we believe that this is the correct Matthew John POWELL.

Victory Medal

Given the information we have available it is likely that Cadwaladr James OTTLEY was entitled to the Victory medal, also called the Inter Allied Victory Medal. This medal was awarded to all who received the 1914 Star or 1914-15 Star and, with certain exceptions, to those who received the British War Medal. It was never awarded alone. These three medals were sometimes irreverently referred to as Pip, Squeak and Wilfred.

Eligibility for this award consisted of having been mobilised, fighting, having served in any of the theatres of operations, or at sea, between midnight 4th/5th August, 1914, and midnight, 11th/12th November, 1918. Women who served in any of the various military organisations in a theatre of operations were also eligible.

British War Medal

From the information available to us, it is very possible that Cadwaladr James OTTLEY was entitled to the British War Medal for service in World War One. This British Empire campaign medal was issued for services between 5th August 1914 and 11th November 1918.

The medal was automatically awarded in the event of death on active service before the completion of this period.

Information from Ron CARPENTER

"His time at sea was served in the Pursers'/Chief Stewards' Department as opposed to being a navigating officer or able seaman in the Deck Department.  As with Clive ninety years later, he wanted to see the world and service as a steward provided both employment and opportunity....Personally I believe Deep Sea Merchant Seaman as already used is a more accurate and descriptive note of occupation at that time"

"I know that Nickie died at Cowick Road because my grandfather blamed himself for her death - draught from the street straight into the living room was said to be responsible.  He had a "lobby" built to prevent a repeat".

A message from a Bob BARKER on 27th May 2014 gave the following information:

Leslie Arthr Ernest SSTANDAGE who lived at 1 Shellwood Rd for more than 30 years actually got a medal (the Imperial Service Medal) for his long service as a postman. What I don’t know is how he was related to the William Henry STANDAGE who lived there a generation earlier (his son?). Having now found a birth with POWELL as the mothers maiden name I believe he was a son of William's, although born 10 years after his elder sibling.

War Medal 1939-1945

As with most Armed Forces Serving Personal during the conflict of World War Two, Kenneth Gordon OTTLEY was entitled to the War Medal 1939-1945. This medal was awarded to all full time service personnel who had completed 28 days service between 3rd September 1939 and the 2nd September 1945. Eligible personnel who had been “Mentioned In Despatches” during the War were entitled to wear a bronze oak leaf emblem on the ribbon. Those eligible for a campaign star, yet who had their service cut short by death, wounds or capture by the enemy, still qualified for this medal.

1939-45 Star

Given the information available to us it is likely that Kenneth Gordon OTTLEY was awarded the 1939-45 Star for operational Service in the Second World War between 3rd September 1939, and 2nd September 1945.

Kenneth Gordon OTTLEY would have been awarded this star if their service period was terminated by their death or disability due to service. Also the award of a gallantry medal or “Mention In Despatches” also produced the award of this medal, regardless of their service duration.

Fighter Aircraft Crew who took part in the Battle of Britain (10 July to 31 October 1940) were awarded the "Battle of Britain" bar to this medal. In undress uniform, a silver-gilt rosette was worn on the medal ribbon to denote the award of this clasp.

1939-45 Star

Given the information available to us it is likely that Derrick Keith Tasman OTTLEY was awarded the 1939-45 Star for operational Service in the Second World War between 3rd September 1939, and 2nd September 1945.

Derrick Keith Tasman OTTLEY would have been awarded this star if their service period was terminated by their death or disability due to service.

Formed: 1936

The RAFVR was formed in July 1936 to provide individuals to supplement the Auxiliary Air Force (AAF) which had been formed in 1925 by the local Territorial Associations. The AAF was organised on a Squadron basis, with local recruitment similar to the Territorial Army Regiments. Initially the RAFVR was composed of civilians recruited from the neighbourhoods of Reserve Flying Schools, which were run by civilian contractors who largely employed as instructors members of the Reserve of Air Force Officers (RAFO), who had previously completed a four year short service commission as pilots in the RAF. Navigation instructors were mainly former master mariners without any air experience. Recruits were confined to men of between 18 and 25 years of age who had been accepted for part time training as Pilots, Observers and Wireless Operators. The object was to provide a reserve of aircrew for use in the event of war. By September 1939, the RAFVR comprised 6,646 Pilots, 1,625 Observers and 1,946 Wireless Operators

When war broke out in 1939 the Air Ministry employed the RAFVR as the principal means for aircrew entry to serve with the RAF. A civilian volunteer on being accepted for aircrew training took an oath of allegiance ('attestation') and was then inducted in to the RAFVR. Normally he returned to his civilian job for several months until he was called up for aircrew training. During this waiting period he could wear a silver RAFVR lapel badge to indicate his status.

By the end of 1941 more than half of Bomber Command aircrew were members of the RAFVR. Most of the pre-war pilot and observer NCO aircrew had been commissioned and the surviving regular officers and members of the RAFO filled the posts of flight and squadron commanders. Eventually of the "RAF" aircrew in the Command probably more than 95% were serving members of the RAFVR.

During 1943, the decision was taken by the Air Ministry to raise an order for members of the RAFVR to remove the brass and cloth 'VR's worn on the collars and shoulders of officers and other ranks (respectively), as these were viewed as being divisive. No similar order was raised for members of the Auxiliary Air Force, who retained their 'A's on uniforms at that time.

On 1 May 2008 we received information from Ian UPWARD that details for Rosalind Lizzie's birth as 4 October 1893 were incorrect because her birth registration was in the June quarter of 1893 and although her birth could be confirmed by a death entry such a death in the names of WOOD or OTTLEY had not been found.

We agree with the information about the birth entry, it was in the June quarter of 1893.  However, there is a Rosalind Lizzie WOOD death registered in the December quarter of 1980 which shows her birth as 4 October 1892.  Perhaps she was born on that date, but there was a delay in the registration.  It is probable that this query can only be solved by the purchase of the relevant certificates.

never served overseas

01  - Whilst a signal box operator, he witnessed an accident and in helping to remove the body realised the man was his ex headmaster. This affected Philip's mental state which resulted in fainting fits and he had to revert to being a porter. He however managed to reach the ranks of ticket collector and senior ticket collector

02 - As a boy he had to work for his father in the shoemaking business. On one occasion instead of delivering some leaflets he threw the lot into the River Mole only for somebody to find them and return them to his father.

03 - At age 13 he tried to run away from home but on asking the way from a policeman he was discovered to be missing and was duly returned.
