An unsuccessful search has been made in all the parishes surrounding Reigate for the birth of Thomas POWELL, and in the more immediate parishes for the birth of Hannah BURCHALL's mother.  In the case of Thomas a seach has also been made for POWELL Wills with no results.

It was found that part of Buckland parish was detached, and this area was situated near Sidlow Bridge which is half way between Reigate and Horley.  This goes some way to explain how Thomas (who was baptised in Reigate) and Hannah (who was baptised in Horley) met.  The information about Buckland parish was obtained from a local history book about Buckland and the author was contacted to see if he had any information about large properties where Hannah could have worked.  The estate had been bought in 1794 and ownership had passed through one family until nearly the present day.  However, details of the staff employed was not amongst the archives.

COINCIDENCES!

Jean and Dennis WHEATON moved to Horley, Surrey in 1961. In one of the photograph albums of our mother, Olive Kathleen TERRY (née POWELL) there is a picture of Olive POWELL's family on bicycles.  The snap-shot includes, in the background, a sign post pointing to Horley.  Over the years our  grandmother, (Agnes Olive POWELL née COBB) had talked of relations in Horley but we believed them to be those related to her mother's WALLER family from nearby Newdigate, Rudgewick and Cranleigh.  The POWELL family came from London, we KNEW that!

After Olive TERRY's death in 1983 we began our Family History research, but it was not until 1992 that we found that our POWELL ancestors had lived in Reigate, and that Hannah BURCHALL, our great-great-great grandmother, was christened in the Church of St Bartholomew, the same church where, some two hundred years later, we had the christening of our daughter, Lynne Kathryn WHEATON.

Marriage Notes for William POWELL and Mary POWELL:

On Family search no marriages were found in Reigate or Wimbledon.

The only ones that were possible fits were:

William POWELL and Mary Ann SMITH 19 May 1828 St Mary, Newington, Surrey and

William POWELL and Mary Ann SICKER 8 December 1830 St George the Martyr, Southwark, Surrey

Sight of the actual Parish Register might give the name of William's father.  Otherwise there are no clues as to whether one of these is what we need.  More research required

Living with them was William KNIGHT (20) Ag Lab born Surrey

1851        Not found

We are not sure whether John married either Ruth PEAT or Eliza ONGLEY. He cannot have married both, one on 1823 and the other in 1824 because the Ruth PEAT's children's births are from 1821-1833 and Eliza ONGLEY's chIldren's births are from 1825-1835.  We are not sure if we will ever find a solution to this problem so information about both families have been included showing the two possibilities.

If this John POWELL married IRuth PEAT he died before 1841, probably before September 1837

If this John POWELL married Eliza ONGLEY he was alive for the 1841 census but has not been found on the 1851 census and no death between 1841 and1851 in the Reigate District, Surrey has been found.  The only probable John POWELL death in the Reigate District, Surrey was in the March quarter of 1865.  So where was the John who died then in 1851 and 1861?

Marriage Notes for John POWELL and Ruth PEAT:

We are not sure whether John married either Ruth PEAT or Eliza ONGLEY. He cannot have married both, one on 1823 and the other in 1824 because the Ruth PEAT's children's births are from 1821-1833 and Eliza ONGLEY's chldren's births are from 1825-1835.  We are not sure if we will ever find a solution to this problem so information about both families have been included showing the two possibilities.

The information about the Williams in this family, and that of Ruth PEAT and her first husband, William POWELL, is confusing.

William and Ruth had a son William baptised 1816.  We have no other information for him.

Ruth shows she has a son William on the 1851 census when he is living with her age 30 born in Reigate.  This makes him born in 1821 after first husband William had died and before she married second husband John.

Ages and addresses for this second William are shown as:

In 1841 he is in Horley born 1821

In 1851 he is definitely in Charlwood, with his mother, born 1821

In 1861 he is in Charlwood at a similar address to that of 1851 but is born in 1815

In 1871 - not found

In 1881 he is in Charlwood (as POWEL) born 1816

We could obviously have collected the wrong information, but, for example, the details for the address in 1851 and 1861 suggest that the two entries are for the same William, however, a;though the 1851 shows him as the son of Ruth, the birth date and place of birth are different to that on the 1861 census

Information from Veronica TAYLOR 12/11/2009

Isaac BOUSQUET struggled somewhat as a young man. He was an artist and was imprisoned for debt in 1840 and again in 1857, by which time he was married to Eliza GEAR. He was then a Fancy Box Manufacturer using gold and silver 'paper'. Later however, the business thrived and he became a much more respected citizen. In 1877 he became churchwarden at St Giles, Cripplegate in the City of London. When he died, he left an estate of over £1500 to his wife, and he was a director of the Cripplegate Bank and trustee of many local charities. His obituary which was published in the City Press, is full of praise.

Notes for Caroline HEWETT:

I have the death date as 2 March 1882 with a note "check date".  Why I wrote this I can no longer remember!  However, I cannot find this death on FreeBMD; neither can I find a Caroline HEWETT on the 1871 census.  There is a Caroline HEWETT death in the March quarter of 1866 age 2 and I see that I have a death for her brother also on the 2 March 1882.  They are one Pages 99 and 101 as shown on FreeBMD.  Given that I cannot find her on the 1871 census, does this 1866 death belong to this Caroline?  But if so, where did the "Age 19" come from?

We have since heard from David MASSIE that Caroline HEWITT died of influenza aged "2 lean years" and was buried 16 March 1866 at St John the Evangelist, Redhill, Surrey.  So we have now deleted the 1882 Age 19 death information.  So, now another problem, who does that information belong to?

On the 1911 census Rebecca is shown as having had 11 children, 6 survive and 5 had died.  We have now found 11 children, with deaths for 5.

She is also shown, although a widow, as being 64 years old and married 46 years, which suggests she married at 18 years old.

However, she was born 8 August 1846 and married 10 September 1871 which would have made her 25 years old at her marriage.

Having married in 1871 she would have been married 40 years by 1911, not 46 as shown on the 1911 census.

Ridge Street, Bermondsey, Surrey

Ridge Street was to be found within an area in Bermondsey bordered by Southwark Park Road to the north, the South East & Chatham Railway to the east, Lynton Road to the south and Jamaica Road to the West.  It was a turning from the east side of Camilla Road, about 6 houses south of,  and running parallel to, Southwark Park Road.

From the map it would seem that Ambrose Street (another turning from Southwark Park Road) and Camilla Road were not parallel to each other which probably left a small area between them, and it is in this small area that Ridge Street can be found.  It was a very short street, consisting of perhaps seven houses and was built in the early 1870s, the name being approved in 1871.

In 1881, the Census showed that one, at least, of the houses in Ridge Street was the home for two families.  One family (by the name of TERRY) consisted of a wife with nine children and a lodger, and the other a husband and wife with their two children.  In 1893, of the seven houses, five owners are included in the electoral register.  Of these, three took lodgers.  In No.2, two rooms were let for 4/6d, at No.6, two rooms were let for 6/6d and at No.7, two rooms were let for 4/9d.  All the rooms to let were on the first floor and all were unfurnished.

On the 23rd August, 1874 Charles Henry POWELL and Matilda GEORGE, our maternal great-grandparents, were married at St. James, Bermondsey and they both gave their address as 2 Ridge Street, Bermondsey.  The POWELLs, by December 1874, had moved to nearby Park Terrace, also off Camilla Road.

Sometime between the 17th March 1873 and the 2nd August 1875 John and Sarah TERRY, our paternal great grand-parents, moved to 6 Ridge Street, Bermondsey.

The two families, the POWELLs and the TERRYs, therefore. certainly lived in the same area at the same time, and if the TERRYs moved to Ridge Street early in the 1873/1875 period, the families would have been living next-door-but-one to each other.

The POWELL family moved to Battersea by 1877 from where they went to Tooting.  The TERRYs seemed to have stayed in Bermondsey until at least the early 1890s, but by 1908 they were also living in Tooting.

In the mid-nineteen twenties, the granddaughter of Charles and Matilda POWELL and the grandson of John and Sarah TERRY met at the Methodist Central Hall in  Tooting.  They, Olive Kathleen POWELL and Charles Fraser TERRY subsequently married in 1932, and were our parents.

Oh!  How we wish we had begun researching our family roots earlier and then perhaps our unanswered questions would be answered!  Did the families know each other in Bermondsey?  Did they keep in touch when they moved to Tooting?  Were there kindly grandparents keeping an eye on the blossoming romance between the young people in the two families?

Or was it all just chance?

Letter from Mrs Florence CARPENTER 31 May 1984

"He was a scaffold foreman for a building contractor and responsible for the safety of the erections/  No one was at work on the Christmas Eve because there was a very thick flog, but an Inspector insisted on being taken up very much against Granddad's better judgement.  According to the Inspector's evidence at the inquest Granddad lost his bearings in the fog on the way down and fell off the unfinished scaffold.  That was his story because he wanted to reduce the firm's liability for inspecting in a thick fog, for compensation purposes".

Letter from Mrs Florence CARPENTER 17 May 1984

"During the First World War Matilda POWELL went to work at Chipstead Golf Club.  Albert POWELL was in the Army so Agnes POWELL went with her daughter Olive to Chipstead out of the Zeppelin raids.  Granddad went at weekends and did the donkey work, Grandma did the cooking and dishing up and Aggie waited at table and if I behaved myself I was alloed to take in the cheese course, half a small Cheddar wrapped in a serviette, and a tin of cheese biscuits, which were served to every table.  My family had a lot to thank Aggie for, she was always there in a time of family crisis".

Letter from Mrs Florence CARPENTER 31 May 1984

"Matilda had a confectionery and tobacco shop with Uncle Charlie at Earlsfeld.  Very capable person and very much the matriarch all her life.  She brought up her mother's family and had a sizeable family of her own and in her old age was a housekeeper to Uncle Charlie and his family.  Wherever help was needed she was always there.  We were all scared of her when we were children but I had a lot of compassion for her in her old age"

Hannah. she had with her (ancestry.com's translation) a Cho LOVELL, born in 1841, so a little

bit too old for Benjamin, but looking at the Census it could just as easily be Ben or Benj as

Cho, but the age is very clear

1900        Queens Ward 1. Queens, New York, USA

Roll: T623; Page 11B; Enumeration District: 627.  Benjamin and John are neighbours.

There was the following information on ancestry.com for a Benjamin LOVELL

1871; Arrival: New York , United States;

Microfilm serial: M237; Microfilm roll: M237_341; Line: 27; List number: 284.

Benjamin LOVELL went to the US in 1871 on the Ship the "City of Brussels" sailing from Liverpool via Queenstown, Ireland and arriving in New York on the 17th April 1871. He does not appear to have any family with him and he is down as a Mason as his occupation.  However, we feel that this is not "our" Benjamin who was living in Kensington, Middlesex at the time of the 1871 census.  As this census was taken on the early April 1871 Benjamin could not have been in New York by the 17th of the same month.

There is a plea for Naturalization for a Benjamin LOVELL who arrived in 1872 and was a Mason whose date of Naturalization was February 17 1886 with the address 306 E 74 St New York.  This is most likely the same Benjamin as the one above, but of course it does not say if he went back and forth between 1872 and 1886.

There is an Anne LOVELL, but aged 26 so birth year 1845, who arrived in New York on the 5th September 1871 out of Liverpool on the "City of Washington", so this is the most likely entry for Hannah. She had with her, according to ancestry.com, a Cho LOVELL born 1841, so a little old for Benjamin, but looking at the actual census it could just as easily be Ben or Benj.  Is this couple "our" Benjamin and Hannah?

They must have travelled to America before May 1872 as that was then the first of their two children with USA birth places was born according to the UK 1881 Census and the various US Censuses.

There is another sailing for a Benjamin LOVELL in 1868 on the "William PENN" which sailed from Le Havre and London and arrived in New York on the 12th April 1868.  This Benjamin was a Bricklayer born 1846 - just like "ours"!

Further thoughts on Benjamin LOVELL….

Marriage.

We could get a certificate to find out exactly when they married.

I go along with your thoughts…. that they must have been married before the 2nd April….for the entry to be in the March quarter 1871

1871 Census….

..so if the 1871 Hannah POWELL information is the right person….then she did not tell her employers she was married. As they were definitely in America in 1873 when their first son was born perhaps, when they married, they had already decided to emigrate. They had decided that Benjamin should go first, and that Hannah would need to keep her job for a bit….so Benjamin would have had to live somewhere…so had gone back to his mother just until he was ready to sail.

But if he was on the 1871 census…..he could not have been the Benjamin LOVELL who arrived in New York on the 17th April 1871 could he? How long did it take to get to America on a sailing ship in 1871? If he was in England on the 2nd April it would have been just a fortnight. I’m not good on web searches and the only information I could come up with was 22 days…when that was I have no idea but I think it is the present.

Ruth LOVELL and family

I looked for her on other census returns. I found her on the 1851 as LAVELL with husband William at 2 High Street, Kensington Town, Kensington, Middlesex with children Ruth (14), Thomas (9), Elizabeth (9), Caroline (6), Benjamin (5) and William (2). So, Benjamin was with a Ruth in 1851 and in 1871… Benjamin would have been 15 in 1861…could he have gone to America by then…who with? Older brother Thomas? (I think Ruth died Age 51 in 1875….can’t find her on the 1881)

Benjamin LOVELL

Were there more than one?

Looked up births…and only one I came up with was a Joseph Benjamin born December quarter 1846 Westminster District. There were a two Benjamins born March quarter 1847 in Newport, but none in Westminster, so I think this Joseph Benjamin could be “our” Benjamin. But why the change from Joseph to Benjamin on the 1851 census… and thereafter?

But then on the 1861 census there was 1 Benjamin LOVELL in Westminster born about 1846 +/- 1 year…and he says he was born in Nottinghill, and 1 in Glamorgan who says he was born Bedwellty, Monmouthshire, Wales. Reading this through just before I send it….it could be the Nottinghill one….however…he was a Page to a General Practitioner – not really in line with being a Bricklayer 10 years later. RG9; Piece: 13; Folio: 65; Page: 35;

So, other than show that there was another Benjamin LOVELL about I don’t think I got any further forward going down that line!

Occupations

I quite like the idea of making the Bricklayer Benjamin have the same occupation throughout and making the Mason another Benjamin!

In which case (I think)

1868 Benjamin *the Bricklayer” went to New York arriving 12 April 1868

1868-1871 Returned to marry Hannah in 1871 and be with his mother in 1871 for the census

1871-1873 Then back to America sometime before 1873 with Hannah, where they had Percy/Benjamin and John

(I see they both give 1873 as a birth year)

1873-1877 They returned to England by 1877 when Florence was born in Hammersmith

1877-1881 Probably living in Hammersmith, son William born there 1880

1881 Living in Hammersmith with family

1881 September, moved to Fulham where son William died

1882 Went back to America from Liverpool to New York on the "CITY OF ROME" arriving 22 May 1882

1883 Hannah, with children Percy/Benjamin, John and Florence sailed from London to New York on "FRANCE"

arriving 6 June 1883.

1900 was a Bricklayer in New York.

The other Benjamin “the Mason” went to America on the Ship the "CITY OF BRUSSELLS" sailing from Liverpool via Queenstown, Ireland and arriving in New York on the 17th April 1871.

Applied for Naturalization in February 1886 Would he have been able to do this so quickly if he had finally arrived in 1883?

So, I think there were two of them…..

And that has taken us no further forward!

Further comments expected!

Leslie JENKINS (22) single Turner and Fitter born Hammersmith, Middlesex and

Albert George HUTCHINGS (21) single Printer Letterpress born Tooting, Surrey

Note

Isaac's wife's maiden name was EHLVERS or EHLVEKE

On the 1901 Census son William is shown as aged 16 so born about 1884/1885.  There was a William Edwin born September quarter 1885 Kensington District, Volume 1a page 75

On the 1891 census there was a Daisy ages 1.  There is no Daisy in the Kensington District.  However, there is a Beatrice Daisy E born December quarter 1889.

When looking at all the children born in the Kensington District from 1871 to 1891 it was noted that there was a Lily Ehlvera POWELL born September quarter 1885 Kensington District 1a page 116.  This must be a child of Isaac and his wife.  If so, William Edwin cannot.

Looking back to 1884/1885 there was a John William E POWELL in June quarter 1884.  When considering that Dora has an initial E, as does Daisy, registered, and that Beatrice was registered with one name and then was known by another, perhaps this John William E POWELL is the William shown on the census returns.  There was a William Ewart POWELL born March quarter 1883 but this would appear to be too close to the previous child,

Therefore, Lily and John William have been included in this family until further information is available
