Man meets death fighting flames
Linton Ind - Searchers Tuesday found the charred body of Thomas J WHEATON, 63, prominent Greene County farmer, on a farm 12 miles south west of here. His clothes became ignited while fighting a grass fire on a neighbours farm, causing him to go blind and rush madly into the raging fire. His screams attracted neighbours to the isolated region where he was stationed to fight the fire, but the blistering heat precluded immediate efforts to rescue him. It was necessary for neighbours to wait several hours for the fire to die down before they could start the search. They found the body below burned timber.
