Rank: 2nd Lieutenant

Campaign Medals:
Victory Medal

Given the information we have available it is likely that C.J. FREESTONE was entitled to the Victory medal, also called the Inter Allied Victory Medal. This medal was awarded to all who received the 1914 Star or 1914-15 Star and, with certain exceptions, to those who received the British War Medal. It was never awarded alone. These three medals were sometimes irreverently referred to as Pip, Squeak and Wilfred.

Eligibility for this award consisted of having been mobilised, fighting, having served in any of the theatres of operations, or at sea, between midnight 4th/5th August, 1914, and midnight, 11th/12th November, 1918. Women who served in any of the various military organisations in a theatre of operations were also eligible.

British War Medal

From the information available to us, it is very possible that C.J. FREESTONE was entitled to the British War Medal for service in World War One. This British Empire campaign medal was issued for services between 5th August 1914 and 11th November 1918.

The medal was automatically awarded in the event of death on active service before the completion of this period.

Information from Wheaton FREESTONE 24/2/2011
A spinster, occupations Postmistress and Book Keeper working in Elstree,Herts until about 1930 when she stopped to look after her mother. She was a small presise lady and a stickler for punctuality and would be decidely feisty if timekeeping was not kept. She went to work The story goes that she went to work every day, until one day the bus left her behind because it left 2 or 3 mins early. She checked her watch then crossed the road to a shop and phoned the man in Watford (about 6 miles away) and complaind so fiercely that he sent a car to take her to work. She always arrived at the stop on time and its said that the bus crews set their watches by her. She lived in her house from when it was built about 1908 until her death and never altered it except for getting mains water, even the lavatory stayed down the bottom of the garden. Just a personal note, I used to love going round there as a kid, toasting crumpets lots of butter, it was a magical place to me, with old cooking range, the flat irons on the side.
