Generation No. 1

1. John1 DRING1,2,3,4 was born Bef. 16575, and died May 1731 in Warboys, Huntingdonshire6. He married (1) Mary SMITH7,8 1682 in All Saints, Huntingdon, Huntingdonshire9,10. She was born Abt. 166211, and died Unknown. He married (2) Joane HILLS12,13 14 April 1692 in St Mary Magdalene, Warboys, Huntingdonshire14,15,16,17. She was born Abt. 167218, and died Abt. March 1721/22 in Warboys, Huntingdonshire19,20. He married (3) Elizabeth WOMERSLEY21,22 1725 in Bluntisham cum Earith, Huntingdonshire23,24. She was born Abt. 170525, and died Abt. February 1727/2826.

Notes for John DRING:

The eariest baptism we have for a child of John DRING is August 1693 which is sixteen months after he married Joanne HILLS. However, this first child, and four later ones are all shown with the mother as Mary. The following eight children have Joane shown as their mother.

Jim BECK and John ROWELL have both suggested that all the children had the one mother, Joane, and that would seem to be the case, given the date of the John/Joane marriage.

However, why was Mary shown as the mother for the earlier children? Angela EDMONDS has found a John DRING/Mary SMITH marriage in 1682 in All Saints, Huntingdonshire. There are, however, no children baptised in that church for these parents. It could be that John was married to this Mary, they went to Warboys where they lived for up to ten years, and because the Warboys clerk was used to "John and Mary" he put the incorrect name in the baptism register for the children of "John and Joane".

For the time being John is shown as marrying three time, but it is obvious that more research is required.

Notes for William SETCHELL:

Information from Kathleen Morgan 23/6/2007

William SETCHELL, who married Ann DRING, lived in Upwood , Huntingdonshire; where he built a mill. He had several acres of land and a few employees. His mill is in someone's back garden.

I seem to recall not many SETCHELLs at the local church graveyard, maybe a DRING or two. There is also a smaller graveyard at the top of a hill, a little distance from the church, as I recall, the locals know of it. It's where several of my SEETCHELLs are buried. I was only there for a few minutes, as the lady who drove me there had to go home, so I was unable to copy most of the information there.

There was a small book written by the local Upwood history society that spoke about the mill, but, I was unable to obtain a copy. They do have a more updated one I believe

"Notes for JOHNSON DRING:

Johnson DRING and wife Elizabeth had many children, over the years the different branches of their family continued to keep in touch with each other as individual relatives were found visiting each other during census nights. These mentions of relatives helped in linking one family to another and proving relationships.

As we know Johnson DRING was mentioned in his father Oliver's will as being of Alconbury, Huntingdonshire, this in 1826.

* Here his son Oliver married Mary GEORGE in 1830.

* Oliver also had a much younger sister Mary who we know to have been born in Alconbury.

* This daughter Mary later married William SYMINGTON and their children were born in Leighton Buzzard.

* Oliver and Mary GEORGE DRING's first daughter was born in Alconbury Weston in 1833 and Susannah married William WILLIAMSON and they too lived and had two sons both born in Leighton Buzzard.

* William SYMINGTON was a Linen Draper and in 1851 census William WILLIAMSON was working for him as a Drapers Assistant, both these men were Scots born in Ayr.

* William SYMINGTON had a brother David, he too started working life as a Linen Draper married Ann WATTS (first wife) in Huntingdonshire and one of their daughters was found living with the WILLIAMSON's family and is named as a cousin.

All these links between family members indicated a relationship that was maintained over many decades.

From the census returns it is difficult to determine whether it is Paddock, Piddock or Puddock Drove, or whether it is Paddocks, Piddocks or Puddocks.

From Peter CHRISTMAS to John TERRY 14/12/2010

The references to Puddock Drove are to a long straight minor road which links Warboys with the Forty Foot Drain at Puddock Bridge (my mother Kathleen BEHAGG was born just near Puddock Bridge). The road goes in a North Easterly direction from Warboys up towards Forty Foot drain. It is very sparsely populated these days and very run down, but seems to have been home to many agricultural workers in the Victorian era. I was there just over a week ago.

The information we had showed that Mary was baptised 1st January 1780. However, we have found a burial for the Mary baptised on this date on the IGI on the 15th April 1782, and as the ages of Mary WATTS on the various censuses suggest she was born about 1794/5 we believe that the 1780 baptism does not belong to her
