Notes for William CROSS:

Only a possible son, the only CROSS in the Axmouth Baptism Register not connected to "our" CROSS family.  A suitable baptism has not yet been found to prove that William belongs to this family.  However he is described as William CROSS junior so there must have been a William CROSS senior.  This William is only included here because, as afore mentioned, all the others in the parish register belong to this family.  More research required.

4.  John2 CROSS (William1)52,53 was born Abt. 1708 in Axmouth, Devon54,55,56, and died 25 May 1772 in Axmouth, Devon57,58.  He married Elizabeth JEFFERD59,60 8 October 1730 in Axmouth, Devon61,62.  She was born 11 January 1705/06 in (only from IGI/Internet, extracted by Latter Day Saints from Parish Registers - needs checking)63,64, and died 15 March 1786 in Axmouth, Devon age 8064.

Notes for John CROSS:

It is prossible that the following applies, but at present it cannot be proven.

However, since the above statement was written and the following details typed in here, it has become apparent that the CROSS inhabitants of Axmouth at this period of time all appear to be connected.  The information from Axmouth, extracted by the Latter Day Saints has therefore been entered for the various individuals names, as well as it being left here to emphasize that it might be entered wrongly.  Therefore, all details which have been left below ought to be checked with the parish registers.

John CROSS - baptised 25 March 1708 in Axmouth Devon with father William.  This could be "our" John. At this time wives'/mothers' names were only infrequently entered in the register.

Other children of William were:

Joseph CROSS - baptised 14 February 1698 in Axmouth, Devon (probably died before 1703)

Mary CROSS - baptised 7 March 1700 in Axmouth Devon

Joseph CROSS - baptiised 18 January 1703 in Axmouth, Devon

Sarah CROSS - baptised 20 May 1705 Axmouth Devon (I believe she had a son, Robert CROSS baptised 19 July 1730 Axmouth, Devon)

So, was there a William marriage in Axmouth which could fit?

On the Familysearch web site:

William CROSS married Sarah RUDD in 1704 in Axmouth, Devon.  His father was William CROSS snr

William CROSS married Sarah about 1697 in Axmouth, Devon

William CROSS - buried 18 November 1748

These items of information were entered by individuals and do not appear on the list of marriages for Axmouth extracted from the registers by the Latter Day Saints themselves.  As an indication of why it is necessary to be wary about such information, the following was extracted by the Latter Day Saints from the Parish Registers (although this would also need checking)

William CROSS married Sarah RODD 11 April 1699 in Crediton, Devon

The similarity in the name of the two Sarahs makes the Axmouth marriage very questionable.

There are several other William CROSS marriages elsewhere in Devon, but no clues as to which one is the right one!

1871        Cannot find a Frances BRINSOM or SALTER, nor Thomas BRINSOM or Robert SALTER

Frances Patience CROSS married either a Thomas BRIMSON or a Robert SALTER, the other female on the BMD was a Jane SNELL. On the 1871 Census there is only one Thomas BRIMSON and he is married to a Jane. (in 1861 Thomas BRIMSON is down as born in Pottimore, Devon, as is the one in 1871 so I am certain same person,  he appears again on the 1881 Census with Jane and in 1901 he is a widower but with the correct children. From this I deduct that Frances married Robert SALTER, I have at present not found this couple after marriage.

Having looked at this more closely I think that there was an Alexander CROSS born in 1852 who died young, then possibly the following child which at present I have no trace, then another Alexander CROSS born in 1856, who appears on the 1861 aged 5 and later on ie the 1901 Census in London married to an Ellen, born in Axmouth but show as born in 1860.

I thought I have found the marriage for Thomas, and there is a Thomas KINGDON born in 1861 Meshaw Devon on the 1881 Census married to a Sarah with three sons, however there is a mother-in-law with the family and her name is Emily H CHAPPLE a widow, so the HANDFORD and the CHAPPLE do not tie up, unless her Sarah's mother had remarried, Sarah herself is only 23 so unlikely to have been married before. More research needed.

Robert MAYNE

Resident of This Township and City Nearly Half a Century

Dies Friday Evening

Last Friday evening at about 9 o’clock after month of suffering from asthma and complications, Robert MAYNE, a pioneer of this community, passed away at his residence on West Main street. His ailment had prevented him from sleeping in his bed for several weeks, being forced to take all his rest while sitting in a chair. For several days he was seen to be failing rapidly although he would not give up entirely. Friday night at the hour above stated, he crossed the room assisted by one of his sons, when suddenly he sank to the floor, expiring immediately.

Robert MAYNE was born in Devonshire England July 27 1835. He came to America, arriving in this country on March 24 1854. His first two years were spent in New York and Canada. In the spring of 1856 he moved to Peoria county, Illinois where he continued to reside for seven years. He then came to El Paso township and until about eight years ago resided on his farmland southwest of town. In 1904 he and Mrs. MAYNE erected a commodious home on west Main street and took up their residence in the city to rest from their long labors on the farm. Mr. MAYNE was married to Miss Alice CAMPBELL in the year 1864. Besides the sorrowing wife the deceased leaves nine children to mourn the taking away of the husband and father. The children are Wilbur, of Newton, Kansas; Thomas C. Chicago; 'Mrs. Nellie Muller, Peoria; Mrs. Minnie Herr, Zearing, IA.; Mrs. Bettie Burroughs, Panola; Richard and Robert, El Paso; Mrs. Maud Pfleeger and Mrs. Jettie Pfleeger, El Paso. Surviving the deceased, are also two sisters in England, Mrs. Mary SAXON and Mrs. Lizzie PIKE besides twenty six grandchildren.

Mr. MAYNE had been a member of the Presbyterian church for about thirty five years, and it was from this church of his choice that the funeral services were held last Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock, Rev. R. F. CRESSEY in charge. The service was attended by a large number of the friends and neighbors who had known Mr. MAYNE so long and so well. Internment was in the city cemetery. [Evergreen]

DEATH OF PIONEER

Mrs. Elizabeth MAYNE Passes to Final Reward Yesterday Morning

Funeral Saturday

Wednesday morning at 11:30 o’clock another of El Paso’s most highly regarded residents joined those in death who with her had taken a prominent part in the early history of the community and since have, passed on.

Elizabeth Alice CAMPBELL was born to Thomas and Betsy CAMPBELL at Blairsville, Pa., February 11, 1841. When she was. 15 years of age she came with her parents to Illinois, the trip being by boat down the Ohio river. and, up the Mississippi to Knox county where the family resided for several years, then moving to Woodford County to the farm southwest of El Paso now owned by Charles GRIESER. The CAMPBELL home early served a distributing post for the mail routes when all mail was carried overland on, horse back in saddlebags. It is stated that Elizabeth frequently assisted the mail carriers by helping them to dismount when their clothing was actually frozen to their saddles.

In 1864 Elizabeth CAMPBELL was united in marriage to Robert MAYNE who had come over from England when he was a youth of 19, in 1856. Mr. MAYNE first settled in Peoria, county and seven years later, in 1863, he came to El Paso township. After their marriage the young couple resided on a farm near this bride’s parents, on the place now known as the MAYNE homestead, and occupied by their son Richard and family, In 1904 Mr. and Mrs. Mayne built a commodious home on west Main street, El Paso city, and retired from active, farm activities. Mr. MAYNE died in this home May 17,1912.

Nine children were born to this worthy couple, all excepting one surviving,- as follows: Wilbur of Newton, Kansas; Mrs. Nellie Muller of Peoria; Thomas C. of Muskegon, Michigan; Mrs. Betty Steele of Gridley; Mrs. Minnie Herr of Zearing, lowa.; Richard, Robert, and Mrs. Jettie Pfleeger of El Paso township. One daughter, Mrs. Maude -M.-.PFLEEGER, preceded her mother in death ten years ago. Mrs. MAYNE also leaves 36 grandchildren and 37 great-grand children, with a host of friends, to mourn her taking away.

In her youth Mrs. MAYNE joined the -El Paso: Presbyterian church of which her father was a charter member, retaining her membership until her demises on October 29, 1930, at- the age of 89 years, 8 months and 18 days. Mother MAYNE, as so many loved to call her, was indeed a mother in Israel to all her acquaintances. Helpful, kindly, ever. forgetful of self, in the welfare of others, she will indeed be missed.  While a shut in for the past twenty years Mrs. MAYNE was a daily reader of her newspaper and kept fully informed on the world's activities. Her dominant will permitted her to care for her physical wants at times when her children hardly understood how she could do so. Mrs. MAYNE suffered a fall last July 4 from which she never fully recovered, until finally her aged body with complications broke, although she never seemed to lose her sweet tempered character and her passing was peaceful and came without murmur. She recognized her-relatives and other visitors until three hours of her demise. Funeral, services will be held from Presbyterian church next Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock, Rev. G. J. HINSHAW in charge. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery beside the remains of her husband.

Addresses

1860       Lyme Regis, Dorset (baptism)

1861       Lyme Regis, Dorset

Thomas was shown as age 10 on the 1861 census making him born 1851, 8 years before Thomas and Edith married.  He is definitely shown as 10 Scholar on the actual census.  Edith would have only been 16/17 if this information is correct

There was no Thomas birth in the right area in 1851, from 1849 to the 1861 census the only Thomas CROSS birth in Axminster was for a Thomas Wiliam James CROSS in the March quarter of 1861. There was a John Thomas CROSS born March quarter 1852

No further information can be found for a Thomas born in the Lyme Regis area in about 1851 or 1861.

Information received 5/10/2011 shows that son Thomas James CROSS who baptised 5 August 1860 in Lyme Regis, Dorset so the information on the 1861 census would appear to be incorrect
