Doreen and Rodney AGUTTER gave a death date as Bet. January - March 1846 Shoreditch District, Middlesex.  However, a Mary Ann is on the 1841, 1851 and 1861 census returns with James.  Perhaps James married two Mary Anns, the Mary Ann on the census returns is considerably younger that James.

In 1841 the actual census return is impossible to read but ancestry made it 1791 (James) and 1814 (Mary Ann)

In 1851 years of birth were 1788 born Bermonsdey, Surrey and 1814 born Hackney, Middesex

In 1861 years of birth were 1789 born Bermondsey, Surrey and 1814 born Hackney, Middlesex

All of which seems to suggest that it is the same Mary Ann, so I do not think the 1846 death belongs to this Mary Ann and the information has been deleted

Mary/Mary Ann(e) AGUTTER cannot be found on the 1871 census

There are the following Mary Anne AGUTTER deaths which could fit

June quarter 1862 Bermondsey District, Surrey Volume 1d Page 79

December quarter 1863 Strand District, Middlesex Volume 1b Page 338

1.  Information from George HURST, Australia and Gerald HURST, Derbyshire

Frederick Charles CONNEW belonged to the 6th Battalion Essex Regiment, was missing in action, found and discharged unfit for action 12 December 1917 and then possibly died 1919.

*  But we have not been about to find a death and given the following information we think this is incorrect.

2.  Information from Ray CONNEW, Australia

Frederick Charles CONNEW died at Loos, France on 25th September 1915 during the war.

*  We have decided that this is the correct information because of the details obtained from the following sources indicate that the Frederick Charles CONNEW who died in 1915 was born in Stoke Newington and his parents were Frederick Henry CONNEW and Jane Maud HURST-

Campaign Medals:

1914/15 Star

Given the information we have available, it is very possible that Frederick Charles CONNEW was was awarded the 1914-15 star campaign medal of the British Empire for his service in World War One.

This Star is identical to the 1914 Star in every respect except that the centre scroll bears the dates “1914- 15” and the two small scrolls bearing “Aug” and “Nov” are omitted.

He would also have received the British War Medal and Victory Medal, as it was not awarded singularly. These three medals were sometimes irreverently referred to as Pip, Squeak and Wilfred. With Pip representing either this medal or the 1914 Star, only one of which could be awarded to a soldier, Squeak represented the British War Medal and Wilfred represented the Victory Medal.

Victory Medal

Given the information we have available it is likely that Frederick Charles CONNEW was entitled to the Victory medal, also called the Inter Allied Victory Medal. This medal was awarded to all who received the 1914 Star or 1914-15 Star and, with certain exceptions, to those who received the British War Medal. It was never awarded alone. These three medals were sometimes irreverently referred to as Pip, Squeak and Wilfred.

Eligibility for this award consisted of having been mobilised, fighting, having served in any of the theatres of operations, or at sea, between midnight 4th/5th August, 1914, and midnight, 11th/12th November, 1918. Women who served in any of the various military organisations in a theatre of operations were also eligible.

British War Medal

From the information available to us, it is very possible that Frederick Charles CONNEW was entitled to the British War Medal for service in World War One. This British Empire campaign medal was issued for services between 5th August 1914 and 11th November 1918.

The medal was automatically awarded in the event of death on active service before the completion of this period.

Service:  British Army

Regiment:  Leicestershire Regiment

Leicestershire Regiment during World War 1

Since 1815 the balance of power in Europe had been maintained by a series of treaties. In 1888 Wilhelm II was crowned ‘German Emperor and King of Prussia’ and moved from a policy of maintaining the status quo to a more aggressive position. He did not renew a treaty with Russia, aligned Germany with the declining Austro-Hungarian Empire and started to build a Navy rivalling that of Britain. These actions greatly concerned Germany’s neighbours, who quickly forged new treaties and alliances in the event of war. On 28th June 1914 Franz Ferdinand the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne was assassinated by the Bosnian-Serb nationalist group Young Bosnia who wanted pan-Serbian independence. Franz Joseph's the Austro-Hungarian Emperor (with the backing of Germany) responded aggressively, presenting Serbia with an intentionally unacceptable ultimatum, to provoke Serbia into war. Serbia agreed to 8 of the 10 terms and on the 28th July 1914 the Austro-Hungarian Empire declared war on Serbia, producing a cascade effect across Europe. Russia bound by treaty to Serbia declared war with Austro-Hungary, Germany declared war with Russia and France declared war with Germany. Germany’s army crossed into neutral Belgium in order to reach Paris, forcing Britain to declare war with Germany (due to the Treaty of London (1839) whereby Britain agreed to defend Belgium in the event of invasion). By the 4th August 1914 Britain and much of Europe were pulled into a war which would last 1,566 days, cost 8,528,831 lives and 28,938,073 casualties or missing on both sides.

The Regiment raised a total of 19 Battalions during the course of the First World War and served in France and Flanders, Mesopotamia and Palestine, losing approximately 6,000 men throughout the war.

2nd Battalion

04.08.1914 Stationed at Ranikhet, India as part of the Garhwal Brigade of the Meerut Division.

12.10.1914 Mobilised for war and landed at Marseilles and engaged in various actions on the Western Front including the Battle of Neuve Chapelle.

17.11.1915 Moved to Alexandria and transferred to the 28th Indian Brigade of the 7th Indian Division.

23.11.1915 Moved to Mesopotamia and engaged in various actions against the Ottoman Empire including; the battles of Shaikh Saad, Kut-al-Amara, the various battles of Sannaiyat, and the capture of Baghdad.

22.01.1918 Moved to Palestine and engaged in various actions against the Turkish army including; the captured of 'North and South Sister' Hills, raid of 'Piffer Ridge', and the Battle of Megiddo.

31.10.1918 Ended the war in Syria, Shaikh Badaur near Tripoli.

Campaign Medals:

War Medal 1939-1945

As with most Armed Forces Serving Personal during the conflict of World War Two, Albert Cecil SHARP was entitled to the War Medal 1939-1945. This medal was awarded to all full time service personnel who had completed 28 days service between 3rd September 1939 and the 2nd September 1945. Eligible personnel who had been “Mentioned In Despatches” during the War were entitled to wear a bronze oak leaf emblem on the ribbon. Those eligible for a campaign star, yet who had their service cut short by death, wounds or capture by the enemy, still qualified for this medal.

1939-45 Star

Given the information available to us it is likely that Albert Cecil SHARP was awarded the 1939-45 Star for operational Service in the Second World War between 3rd September 1939, and 2nd September 1945.

Albert Cecil SHARP would have been awarded this star if their service period was terminated by their death or disability due to service. Also the award of a gallantry medal or “Mention In Despatches” also produced the award of this medal, regardless of their service duration.

Fighter Aircraft Crew who took part in the Battle of Britain (10 July to 31 October 1940) were awarded the "Battle of Britain" bar to this medal. In undress uniform, a silver-gilt rosette was worn on the medal ribbon to denote the award of this clasp.

Formed: 1936

The RAFVR was formed in July 1936 to provide individuals to supplement the Auxiliary Air Force (AAF) which had been formed in 1925 by the local Territorial Associations. The AAF was organised on a Squadron basis, with local recruitment similar to the Territorial Army Regiments. Initially the RAFVR was composed of civilians recruited from the neighbourhoods of Reserve Flying Schools, which were run by civilian contractors who largely employed as instructors members of the Reserve of Air Force Officers (RAFO), who had previously completed a four year short service commission as pilots in the RAF. Navigation instructors were mainly former master mariners without any air experience. Recruits were confined to men of between 18 and 25 years of age who had been accepted for part time training as Pilots, Observers and Wireless Operators. The object was to provide a reserve of aircrew for use in the event of war. By September 1939, the RAFVR comprised 6,646 Pilots, 1,625 Observers and 1,946 Wireless Operators

When war broke out in 1939 the Air Ministry employed the RAFVR as the principal means for aircrew entry to serve with the RAF. A civilian volunteer on being accepted for aircrew training took an oath of allegiance ('attestation') and was then inducted in to the RAFVR. Normally he returned to his civilian job for several months until he was called up for aircrew training. During this waiting period he could wear a silver RAFVR lapel badge to indicate his status.

By the end of 1941 more than half of Bomber Command aircrew were members of the RAFVR. Most of the pre-war pilot and observer NCO aircrew had been commissioned and the surviving regular officers and members of the RAFO filled the posts of flight and squadron commanders. Eventually of the "RAF" aircrew in the Command probably more than 95% were serving members of the RAFVR.

During 1943, the decision was taken by the Air Ministry to raise an order for members of the RAFVR to remove the brass and cloth 'VR's worn on the collars and shoulders of officers and other ranks (respectively), as these were viewed as being divisive. No similar order was raised for members of the Auxiliary Air Force, who retained their 'A's on uniforms at that time.
