PROBLEMS!!!!

There are two Albert WHEATONs in Devon in the late nineteen hundreds, one born in 1863 and the other in 1876

The Albert who was born 1863 was blind on the 1881, 1891 and 1901 census returns.  On the 1901 census a blind Albert WHEATON born 1863 has a wife named Sarah A. born 1855.  In the March quarter of 1897 there was an Albert WHEATON/Louis Archibald CROSS/Sarah Ann HINE/Florence Emily PARKIN marriage in Exeter.  It was therefore thought that that the 1897 marriage to Sarah Ann HINE belonged to this Albert.  We also have a Sarah Ann WHEATON death which could fit, although the age at death makes her born 10 years earlier than that shown on the 1901 census. However, age differences like this are quite common! (See notes for Sarah A regarding age queries).  After the death of Sarah Ann Albert WHEATON (father Henry) remarried in 1925 as a widower, to a "Private Nurse" nearly twenty years younger himself.  All this information appears to fit together satisfactorily.

The other Albert, the one to whom these notes are attached, was born in 1876.   I have not been able to find a suitable Albert on the 1901 census despite searching for just "Albert b 1876 +/- 5 years born Devon", Alberts in Broadhembury, Alberts in Exeter besides, of course, Albert and Bert WHEATONs.  When this Albert died, his executor was his wife, Florence WHEATON so I also did a countrywide search for Albert with wife Florence with no success.  In searching for an Albert/Florence (no surnames) marriage, the only one that appeared was the one in the March quarter 1897 to Sarah Ann HINE/Florence Emily PARKIN which we had already decided belonged to the Albert born 1863 where he married Sarah Ann HINE!  We do have a death for a Florence WHEATON which could be the widow of this Albert, but if hers was the 1897 marriage she would have been only 15 when she married.  However, the Albert/Florence marriage cannot be the 1897 one as we cannot have two different Alberts marrying the two brides shown for the 1897 marriage! (And I have found now Louis A and Florence E CROSS in St Austell in 1901, these were the other couple for the 1897 marriage, so Albert could not have married Florence Emily PARKIN).

There is another Albert WHEATON marriage in the December quarter of 1892 in Exeter to Annie ARSOTT or Jane SHARLAND but being born in 1876 this Albert would only have been 16 at the time of the 1892 marriage.  The other groom for the 1892 marriage was Arthur John CAMPFIELD and I have found him with wife Annie born Exeter in Bristol in 1901.  So, it looks as if Albert married Jane.  I have no spare deaths or remarriages for a Jane WHEATON, and I have no Albert/Florence marriages (other than the 1897 one).

On the other hand, the 1892 marriage could be a first marriage for the blind Albert born 1863, he would have been 29 which would seem quite possible given that he was at home with his parents in 1891.  However, I have only one Jane WHEATON death between in 1892 and 1897 when he married Sarah Ann HINE, and the Jane death is in Sidmouth and fits burial details we obtained from the parish register.

Here, I start going round the circle again!

If anyone can help solve this puzzle I should be delighted to hear from them

On the 1881 Census an Albert is shown as being age 25 so born in 1856.  This does not correspond with the age we have for this Albert.  However, it would seem that both men were blind, and we therefore believe they are probably the same person.

More information about Royal Marine Light Infantry: Plymouth Division

Formed: 1664

Troops from the Royal Marines had been stationed in Plymouth and its neighbour, Plymouth Dock, since the formation of the Corps in 1664. Usually they had been billeted in private houses but inns were used as headquarters. Troops were frequently paraded on the Barbican, in front of the Customs House, on a piece of ground still today known as The Parade.

America's War of Independence created a tremendous increase in the number of troops and it was soon felt that a more permanent and suitable home should be found for them rather than have the men billeted as far away as Modbury and Tavistock. Being maritime troops, it was, of course, necessary that this new base should good access to the sea. At Stonehouse the Royal Navy had completed a new hospital in 1762 and a few years later the bridge across Stonehouse Creek was built, thus giving easy access to Plymouth Dock. Stonehouse seemed like an ideal place for a barracks and a site close to Mill Bay was chosen. There was only one other building in the vicinity, the Longroom, which was a popular location for balls and other forms of entertainment.

The barracks were started in 1781 on land bought from Lord Mount Edgcumbe. The design followed a pattern used elsewhere in Britain, notably Chatham, and comprised three accommodation blocks around a parade ground. The fourth side, to the west, consisted of only the Guardroom, the parade ground being separated from Barrack Street by railings. The north block accommodated the junior officers, the south block was home to the senior officers, while the men and NCOs were housed in the much larger east block. The Commandant's residence was at one end of the south block. The barracks were first occupied in 1783.

By 1803 the Longroom had fallen into disuse so negotiations were started in order to purchase the site for an extension to the barracks to free-up the barracks at nearby Millbay. There was a general fear of invasion by the French forces under Napoleon Bonaparte and once again the military forces had been increased to combat this threat. The Longroom site was subsequently acquired from Lord Mount Edgcumbe for the sum of £4,450 and in 1805 a wooden barracks was built, the original Longroom becoming a new Officers' Mess.

Tension was once again increased during the 1850s with the war in the Crimea. To provide extra accommodation the east block was extended northwards, which provided 28 more rooms of 30 beds each. This was completed in 1859. The work did not end there, however, and much other building went on, including, in 1861, the razing and rebuilding of the north block, and in 1862 the conversion of the Racquet Court into the Globe Theatre.

In 1867, the new west block was completed, giving the barracks a fine entrance on what was by now Durnford Street. This provided accommodation for six senior officers as well as offices for the Plymouth Division. Finally, a Divisional School was added in 1871, fronting upon Caroline Place.

Stonehouse Barracks has witnessed several important ceremonial occasions. In 1951 HRH the Duke of Edinburgh presented new colours to the Division and in May 1955 Plymouth honoured the Corps by granting it the Freedom of the City

Victory Medal

Given the information we have available it is likely that Harold WHEATONwas entitled to the Victory medal, also called the Inter Allied Victory Medal. This medal was awarded to all who received the 1914 Star or 1914-15 Star and, with certain exceptions, to those who received the British War Medal. It was never awarded alone. These three medals were sometimes irreverently referred to as Pip, Squeak and Wilfred.

Eligibility for this award consisted of having been mobilised, fighting, having served in any of the theatres of operations, or at sea, between midnight 4th/5th August, 1914, and midnight, 11th/12th November, 1918. Women who served in any of the various military organisations in a theatre of operations were also eligible.

British War Medal

From the information available to us, it is very possible that Harold WHEATON was entitled to the British War Medal for service in World War One. This British Empire campaign medal was issued for services between 5th August 1914 and 11th November 1918.

The medal was automatically awarded in the event of death on active service before the completion of this period.

During World War I, in addition to their usual stations aboard ship, Royal Marines were part of the Royal Naval Division which landed in Belgium in 1914 to help defend Antwerp and later took part in the amphibious landing at Gallipoli in 1915. It also served on the Western Front in the trenches.

The Division's first two commanders were Royal Marine Artillery Generals. Other Royal Marines acted as landing parties in the Naval campaign against the Turkish fortifications in the Dardanelles before the Gallipoli landings. They were sent ashore to assess damage to Turkish fortifications after bombardment by British and French ships and, if necessary, to complete their destruction. The Royal Marines were the last to leave Gallipoli, replacing both British and French troops in a neatly planned and executed withdrawal from the beaches. It even required some Marines to wear French uniforms as part of the deception.

In 1918 Royal Marines led the Zeebrugge Raid. Five Royal Marines earned the Victoria Cross in the First World War, two at Zeebrugge, one at Gallipoli, one at the Battle of Jutland and one on the Western Front. After the war Royal Marines took part in the allied intervention in Russia. In 1919, the 6th Battalion RMLI rose in mutiny and was disbanded at Murmansk.

Royal Marine Light Infantry: Chatham Division during World War 1

More information about Royal Marine Light Infantry: Chatham Division

Formed: 1775

Disbanded: 1950

The Royal Marines were based at Chatham for over 200 years. From 1775 until 1950 the Chatham Division of Royal Marines occupied barracks on a site adjacent to the southern end of the Dockyard. During this time, the Chatham Division was visited by a number of royal guests.

HMS Pembroke, the Royal Naval Barracks at Chatham, was built between the Steam Yard and Brompton barracks in the early years of the century. By the outbreak of the First World War Chatham had become one of the Royal Navy's three manning ports with over a third of the navy - 205 ships manned by men allocated to the Chatham Division - a role that was to continue until the advent of central manning in 1956.

Thereafter Chatham became home to the reserve - or standby fleet, although a number of operational ships were also based at the Dockyard including the Antarctic patrol vessel HMS Endurance.

Marriage Notes for Frank WHEATON and Queenie WHEATON:

I have this marriage entered here and in my data base; however, I cannot find it on 1837Online or FreeBMD, nor can I find it in my hand written notes from St Catherine's House.  The bride's name came from Will details so I would assume the marriage took place before spouses's name were first included in the index.  This would tie in with the children, but there are no Frank marriages from 1905 when the bride would have been 17
